Interesting, recent I have thought if I had the chance to sit a few minutes with the Chinese President (Hu Jintao) what would I say? I think it would go like this...

How you run your country is your business. BUT for a country that seems to deal with nature so dearly and respect the past, the air and water pollution doesn't fit the countries way of living. Clean it up buddy!

Congratz Ron!

Voluntary Emissions Targets sounds like middle school boys to me. :dodgy:

At my age it becomes involuntary but still can be  targeted. :icon_cheesygrin:

If you can't hit a moving target, then see the path she takes and move the manhole cover away from her path. If your lucky...you will get a whore in one :icon_cheesygrin:

May I suggest a Peterbuilt, lovely wide front fender and comes with a cross-hair sight built into the front of the hood and an extra mirror that reflex the carnage underneath the rear duels...:s

Use a shotgun with bird shot. Gives a nice wide range at a target.

Vince,

It might be worth saying the exact same thing to your own President, seeing as the biggest pollution problem has always been in the States. Also consider that the States are one of the most technically advanced nations too. You can't ask a developing nation to cut pollution with any conviction until you clean your own backyard up. And to date, the States are one of the biggest economies that have refused to make any significant cuts to Carbon emissions and pollution......

David you are somewhat correct.  However, after living in Beijing for these past two months, on the 12th floor with a great view of the area.  Most days here are so bad that you can barely see 4 blocks and some days less than one block.  I mean a complete white out or grey out.  You cannot walk on bare floors without your feet getting dirty from the soot and smog.  My wife cleans the floors everyday and it is still this way.  The only way to keep them clean is to close all of the windows and turn the air on.  And still you get some dirt in.  Each morning when i wake up, my eyes are filled with sand. Like the "sandman" has been here.  I did not see this in Wuhan or Xi'an when there, but not to say is doesnt happen.
Now there are days when you can see clearly, it depends on which way the wind is blowing and how much rain the day before.  So I believe anything the Chinese do can only improve the situation.  But, "voluntary" is a big word.  if it cuts profits, I cannot see them doing anything just as in the states.  the only time businesses with do anything "voluntarily" is if there are either penalties involved or government subsidies to help defray the costs.  Major industries are very impersonal.  There is no one person to bring to the carpet as it were.  I saw this all of the years I was with GM.  it was always someone Else's fault.  Theoretically the Chairman of the Board is ultimately responsible but that is in name only not the person and until that can be corrected nothing will change.  You can fine the corporation but the shareholders are the ones to feel it.  There again, corporations are the biggest shareholders, now you can devalue the shares a little bit but that is not really hurting an individual that has any real say.  So, in my opinion, the only way to make real progress is to make the fines so terrible that they have no choice or make it profitable to do so.  Any fines have to have real teeth into them.  but right now with the economy the way it is, how can you justify large fines that may make businesses cut more jobs, so right now you are in a catch 22. Because cutting jobs is the easiest way to immediately affect the bottom line.   That is my biggest complaint against any business.  The first thing is to cut jobs, not lets sit down and see how we can do the job better or more efficiently, that takes too much intelligence and work.  lets cut jobs and go from there.

JimB,

I know exactly what your saying here , I've experienced the same thing while living in Beijing, i ended up sealing all the windows to my apartment, save the patio window to the balcony, and that didn't help much either.....

It is all down to geographical locations and local weather conditions. Beijing is in a slight depression and shielded from wind flow from certain directions, which is way the pollution tends to hang around longer than many other places. That and the fact that they have many older factories that are now in the heart of mass populated areas.

As you say, nothing is going to be done about it in the present world economic situation. It just means that by the time they do get round to doing something, it'll probably cost many more time the cost if they were to start taking measures now to cut the emissions.... then that will be the next excuse, not to do anything!!!

As you say .... there's always going to be this ''Catch 22'' situation!!

Dave your going on old info. Pollution laws have been in affect for many years now. I remember when NYC had the heavy cloudy hanging over it. It's no longer there. Some canals are now allot cleaner then they use to be. Most states have a car inspection station that test the emissions of the vehicles driven. There isn't much manufacturing going on here these days (done in other countries).

Just yesterday I found out the auto parts store across the street from me no longer stocks car batteries. Forbidden, in case of acid leaks. You have to order it and they have it shipped in the next day. Used oil and antifreeze can be brought to stations and put into tanks. So the jerks that use to put it down the storm drains can't anymore. Here the drain water (canals) is treated and becomes the drinking water.

So in all the US has been cleaned up. It took years to do but it's happening.

Vince,

The States have been the biggest block on emissions, including Co2 at every World Emissions conference  i can remember. Your talking here about minor stuff that's been in force in Europe donkey's years.... Back in the 50's, was around the last time London saw the famous London Smog!! That's over 40+ years ago...
And your still doing absolutly nothing to remedy or help today's problems with emissions. So not old issues at all, but the same issues that's always been there.... the US emissions block!! You as a country either don't attend these world conferences, or use your weight to block anything that is going to reduce or eliminate global emissions within the States. There's no argument with that Vince, it's a very, very well known fact!!

First, the conference was last week and that's how this topic started. China has agreed to start doing something about it. Secondly, Maybe I'm missing something here? Any emissions of any kind has been changed or outlawed, auto, industrial, aerosol, and even Freon for A/C units. SO what emissions are you referring to?

Vince,
There's been several conferences before the one last week, they have been going on for years, most of which the States refused to attend !!

I Guess anything that classifies as being a greenhouse emission, one of the main one's being Co2...
