Well I've just got back from a walk around the neighborhood. Well, it's hard to put the place into words really. I don't know if the rest of China is as chaotic as Wuhan is.

The gulf between rich and poor here is vast. Walking past a chaotic hospital was very sobering. You don't want to slip down the social ladder here. I think that as wealthy Westerners we have to avoid pandering to our ladies and their families too much - there are 1000's of beautiful ladies here who would do anything to find a wealthy husband, so if yours is too demanding then choose another. Wow that's tough but that's what my well travelled friend told me when I started this adventure, and I'm beginning to think that's the truth.

I've taken a few photos, but with people staring and not having my SLR kit it's hard to get good shots.

Oh, and in 2 hours of walking I didn't see a single Westerner, much less one wearing a suit.

I have at least found a shop that sells beer. It's about 30p a can or large bottle. I could only carry 50RMB worth of shopping and after spending all that money they only gave me 1 carrier bag.

I might go out again later although I only have a Chinese map of the city and the traffic is horrendous. I am not kidding guys when I tell you that crossing the road here is a near death experience :s.

It's difficult to get good photos when everything looks so murky...

I guess it's due to the amount of rain last night.

Cute. Very cute:

'seems like the weather may be the same as in Chongqing. Maybe I'm wrong... but as on the pics, I don't see the sun, that reminded me about it :)
By the way, thanks for the pics, brett :)

Great photos Brett, get used to the murkyness, if you see the sun by the time you get home it will be a bonus.
The cute Chinese ladies are all the prettier without a beautiful blue sky to distract you !

Well guys - a major surprise here. I've been out for a lot of the day. Westerners seen = 0. I did not expect this. Wow I am glad I am an experienced traveller - if this was my first trip outside the UK or even my first trip to Asia I'd be too scared to leave the hotel room :icon_confused:.

I am coming to the conclusion that Wuhan is the last place to be discovered by Western tourists. I have seen some incredible stuff - folk really live their lives on the street here. I've wandered all over the place - I am incredibly lucky in that my hotel is next door to Wuhan's tallest building so there is little fear of  getting lost!

Aside from McDonalds I've not seen any Western restaurants. Or Japanese restaurants come to think of it. I have found somewhere to buy European wine though.

I am waiting for my lady to show me the tourist sites. I have no idea how you catch a bus when there is no English at all. There's not a great deal of English signage here. In fact apart from street signs and tree names in the park there is practically none.

Mike - the taxi ride from the airport was fantastic but I am not really sure if the highlight was the torrential rain, the lack of functioning seatbelt or the fact that at one point we were almost a bus sandwich. Oh and the driver took great pleasure in calling his mates on the cb radio to tell them some other taxi drivers were resolving a roadrage incident with their fists.

I should write up my exploits for a travel supplement, this really is a trip into the unknown...

Well I've seen the babies shitting, the spitting and all that stuff.

There's plenty of stuff I didn't expect, like the shoe shine women!

This place is definately a more capitalist economy than the USA, I haven't seen much in the way of Communism!

Brett,

There's never been a true communist country in this world, and certainly not China. Communism has only ever worked on paper, as soon as you add the Human element into the equation, it all turns to rat-shit.... And that's a ''FACT!!''

There's meant to be a fabulous night market here, but I have no idea where. Oh well I am done exploring for today. I still haven't got down to the river or even explore the other two sub-cities of this place.

Communism doesn't even work on paper, I studied Economics and it's the easiest model to break, it does not take into account human nature ^_^.

Wait until you get into a formula 1 taxi :icon_cheesygrin: I did Pudong to airport in 15 minutes, planned time was 45 minutes according to all info I got in the hotel, the driver was slaloming between the other cars on the freeway, going about 160km/h (100mph). I used to drive like that when I was younger, but he was in a hurry for sure ...I wonder if the car's brakes were in order :s
