how to view youtube clips from under internet blockade?
« on: October 31, 2009, 08:38:30 am »
http://www.youtube.com/ has been blocked here in China since about May so direct IE surf leads to an empty page. Being a semi computer idiot, I have not many ideas to try. I've tried on-line proxy which allows me images and texts but never videos. A software named "free gate" from some pro-liberal orginasations on exile, has been my last resort for a couple of months. But now even it cannot be launched. So now I am desperate. I badly miss the music clips there. Will be grateful to any advice or thoughts.

Tks

Not sure if this will work, but there are places out there which will let you establish a VPN connection (an encrypted connection) to somewhere else and then through there, you can get to other locations.  The response is usually slower, but it's better than nothing.  I haven't really done much research on VPN providers as all the VPN connections I normally use are local, but it works fine.

A quick search came up with Metropipe and Perfect Privacy.  Didn't look into them, but it's an example of what is out there.  Hope that helps.

I used a free VPN called "UltraSurf" that a friend loaded for me before my trip on Aug 8th. It worked for one month then it failed to connect for the next month.

There are VPNs that charge a monthly fee; perhaps, they work better than the free ones ???

I am looking into TOR right now.  Took me a bit to set it up...had to do an internet search on how to set it up, but it seems to be working fine now.  The real test will be when I get to China.

Thank you every one. I'll try the ways you advised. And Martin if you have any progress with TOR, I'm always interested. Really hope I have the eloquence of Cicero to persuade my government against net censorship and solve it ultimately. But perhaps even the union of Cicero, Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr cannot change its stubborn decision. :icon_confused:

I don't know if this will solve your problems or not, but i found this while trying to get on to a TV site.
If what it says here is correct, it should solve your problems. The program is called ''UltaSurf''

I copied this from the sites user guide!!

4. How to Use UltraSurf Program

A user is able to browse any website from the IE for the homepage or open a new window of IE to browse. For example, if the user wants to browse the Secret China news web site, simply enter the URL http://www.secretchina.com directly in the small URL window of the IE, UltraSurf will bring up the web site immediately.

I hope it is what your all looking for .....

Jim,

OK, it was just a chance that it would work for you. These guys seem to be geared up to break the censorship on the net, so maybe an email to them telling them that there program doesn't work anymore, and do they have an update for there program for China's censorship?  ....You never know, they might just have one now...... haha!!

David, I just checked and there is a newer version out.  Maybe it will work.  No harm in trying it anyway.

It might be that you have to set up a dedicated VPN tunell from your pc in china to a pc outside the Great Firewall, and surf from that pc. To be complete sure you might also have to do some kind of encryption of the traffic, the last point is even a bigger guess.

I suspect that the guys running the Great Firwall know of all the programs we discuss here, and they are looking for traffic that  have the "signature" of the these programs. If you are lucky enough to get it to work. They wil eventually close down the traffic.

I have a little knowledge of computers, but when diving into advanced networking/security stuff im on thin ice.

As far as i remember Irishman is working with network, mayby he can clearify ?

Hi Daghoi,

By definition VPN connections are encrypted.  That's no where the problem would be.  VPN connections in and of themselves are not an issue.  They would use those types of connections as well for their own purposes and to devote the computing power to decrypt all those packets is a waste of resources.

The firewalls that China uses is multi-layered.  The site (or IP address) they would want to visit has to pass several criteria.  Those criteria can change without notice (as has been seen by many postings here) in addition to access to those types of sites.

Best I can recommend is to try a few sites that you feel comfortable with (in terms of encryption).  If you can get a VPN tunnel to somewhere out of China, great.  But don't be surprised if it gets blocked eventually.

We could probably recommend a few online sites for people who are just thirsting for news but want a perspective from outside of China.  For example, I'm not sure about the BBC, but Channel News Asia (Singapore's answer to the BBC) is accessable from China.  I know several talk radio stations from Toronto can be access there as well, although the time zone is 12/13 hours off so things can get confusing.

Hi !

Im plannig to some time next year to extend my vacation and work from china serving customer in Norway.

I will typacally set up VPN (cisco client) towards our office in Oslo, that would be and static ip adess of course. That will be running regulary, is it chance this one will be shut down ?

i will also have to log on to our customer, but it will be sporadic and changing all the time.

I did connect to the office when i was over last time, but then i was just a few times and for short period. This time i will probably have the VPN connection going for 7-8 hours a day, for two week time.
