Kenny, Ibis is a French chain !? Sort of lower middle class in France,  should be very good in China though.

Have a look for internal flights here

Thanks David for the info.
I'm going to Guangzhou via Shanghai.
The train from Guangzhou to Changsha is only 2 hours and 20 minutes, and is 327 yuan.
I check cheapflights all the time, but Cathay always seems to be expensive. I wish I could find a flight to Changsha for £499. Anyway, I've already booked it. I know what you say about waiting for cheaper tickets, but I think I got a pretty good deal.

Are you sure about the travel time on this?  I took the train from Changsha and Guangzhou, and it took me 7 hours I think it was.  Unless this is one of those high speed trains.

I know that there was a new high-speed rail link from Guangzhou, but I don't remember where the other end of it is.  This was in the last 2-3 months.  It's a D class (the really fast ones that go 300+kph).  You probably rode the K or T series.

Now if we could only find cheap tickets from Toronto to China...  Closest we get is C$1030 to Shanghai and Beijing ATM (and I don't remember if that's including the airport taxes).

Does anyone know if tickets can be bought online?

I found a ticket for late March out of Toronto going to Hong Kong.  Return is $944 on Continental.  Not the best airline, but the best price so far.

Direct?  Or transiting through Detroit?  Not to offend anyone, but if I can avoid going through the US on my way to and from Asia, I prefer to do it that way.  If it's not the jams, it's the attitude of the border guys going through the airport.

$944 is a good price.  I was quoting AC specials.  Maybe I should call up my travel agent and see what she has on tap.

Frank , For my last Feb. Trip ... I check all the D-Train Ticket's Shanghai to Beijing and back . I could not for dear life , buy them over the internet . Had to wait till I was in Shanghai and then ... got the return Ticket's in Beijing a few day's ahead of leaving Beijing .
( ps : The D-Trains do not go 300+ kph , ( 200-220 tops ) the Bullet Train does though ).

Yes, I am talking about the high -speed train. I took it in December. It goes about 350 kph.l There was no problem getting a ticket on the day. It is too expensive for most Chinese people.

I don't suppose it stops at Hengyang does it Phillip.  I am going there soon.

But then I suppose Hengyang is a bit like Barrow in Furness - no one goes there except for emergencies!!!!

Hi Willy, yes it stops there. Schedule and prices can be found here

I wonder if those trains won't be full as hell around new year, the planes sure are so I'm not sure the relatively steep price is a guarantee for a seat, or maybe in 1st class ...

Frank,

Thanks for info on flights and Ibis hotels. They told me that the rooms would be smaller so i figured not as nice as some. By the time i booked my flight allot of hotels were booked allready. As long as it is clean that is the main thing and maybe western toliet.

JimB,

I am looking to leave from Augusta well after 5pm to arrive in Hong Kong before 6pm on the 31st.  I think the last flight out of August is at 8pm. Haven't been able to find a ticket less than $1000.00.  Do you go west coast or east coast?  I am not sure whether price or night travel is is more important.  Both is optimum.  Got any advice?
