how about buying some DVDs? They're 5rmb if your lady buys them.

Otherwise I found PPS to work really well, but that would depend on your Internet connection.

ttwjr32,

Chinese movie seldom has English subtitle, except some famous movie .
But most of the Hong Kong movie has English subtitle, Especial the old Hong Kong moive is very classic,I watch them grow up.
So you can choose to buy some Hong Kong movie DVD and ask the vendor to play and see whether there has English subtitle or you wonn't buy it. If you always go to the same place to buy DVD,ask them to sort out what you need, I think they will very pleased to help you. 5RMB is the appropriate price if you buy outside the road, and 7-10RMB to buy in a store.

Thanks for making me feel better Yan, I bought them in a store ar 10 rmb, in Luohu Commercial Center on top where prices are extremely, hmmm how should I say, adapted to the customer's origin?

That's a good tip about the HK movies and subtitles, pity I want to learn Mandarin though, not Cantonese, at least not just yet ... so I'll hunt for some Chinese ones with English subtitles next time.

I see enough Chinese films on my TV complete with Chinese subtitles so I watch English films on PC.  Download them from I Tunes usually at 99p a time thats 10 rmb or 60cents.

Hong Kong Pearl channel, which we get in Zhongshan,  does show English films at night with Chinese subtitles.

Willy,

Can you pick-up the Star satellite system there?? Not asking if you have the sattelite system, just asking if it's available there. Your a bit too far away to be picking up Peal terrestaly, so the Chinese must be relaying that channel on from HK. Do they relay any other channels, like the English HK channels on too??

In Shenzhen, you can use your foreigner id card to apply the English Channels like star movie,CNN,BBC,HBO,discovery,ESPN,AXN,Cinemax,NGC, The price is 50-120 per month.
Only foreigner can apply for this.

About the Chinese movie with subtitle, the easiest way is to buy DVD.
There are two types of DVD, DVD5 and DVD9.
Normarlly DVD5 is much cheaper 5-7 RMB. The DVD9 is 10RMB or so.
But the DVD9 has more clear image quanlity moreover has multiplied languages and subtitles.Like English,Chinese,Spanish,French...
You can swtich them accroding you need.

Chen

I didn't know that, ....so if they are available, why can't you apply for these channels also. I take it that your talking about the Star satellite system here. so are you saying you can only receive the Star Chinese programmes, or that you can't apply for the Star system as a whole??

David...

This is one of the limits by National State Administration of Radio Film and Television ,Just like they block youtube, facebook. These foreign websites and channels cann't be easy to reach by Chinese.
