New Thread About Threads
« on: April 15, 2010, 02:43:43 am »
It is just me or does anyone else detect a change is creeping in on the style of this forum.

It seems that some threads are mysteriously being hive off and other entries are disappearing faster than a Labour voter.

I just have a feeling that jesting is being frowned upon somewhere along the line.

But where else can the fellars joke around with each other.

I would bet that more real friendships have been made on this forum than any other.   Probably more members of this forum have met more other members in person than on any other forum.   And many more have engaged in both telephone and messenger conversations than any other.

Or maybe there is a new ruling which says we cannot have a joke or wind each other up on this forum.

At least this forum, unlike many others on the www, is not boring and it is always up to the minute on information.  But will it always be so?

I have noticed this trend also Willy...I for one kinda like the jesting, and there are so many on here with a sense of humor,
and I for one quite enjoy reading all the quips and humor. :icon_cheesygrin::icon_cheesygrin:

I have met many friends on here, and love to hear from them.

My vote is that it stops.  I would hate to think what the next step would be. Like chnlove.com where your comment may appear a day later after it is accepted or not.

This is a practice that needs to stop immediately.  The are occasions when threads need to be closed but most of the time I think not.

Mod's  what's up?

Speaking for myself, nothing is up. I deleted one of Rockycoon's post because it went too far on the vulgar side of humour. But the remaining posts on the topic of Scottish-Ronald McDonald still remain.

This is a Forum on finding Chinese ladies and developing a relationship, not a joke site. That's why we have a separate section to post "jokes" in The Campfire section. That's why you're also more than welcome to rib each other on the "Shoutbox".

Don't you guys agree that we have to remain "on topic" regarding the threads ???

You're doing a diservice to the brother who started his particular thread by going off topic. How would you feel if someone did that to your thread ??? We (MODs) had complaints about this. If someone posts an off topic issue, there could be as many as 20 different reply comments. If I'm searching for information based on a Thread subject title, I don't want to read 20 posts that have nothing to do with the title. That's why we "Split Threads" so as to remain on topic.

Shaun ... how would you feel if your recent thread "My Trip To China" was postings about things that have nothing to do with your trip ???  How would Peggy react when she reads it eventually ??? ... She'll ask you what does these things have to do with our time together ... and why are guys making jokes.

You must admit that there has to be some sort of order and balance on the Forum. Otherwise, it'll just be a general Forum about anything that can be found everywhere. We can't let the inmates run the prison. :icon_biggrin:

Well I guess our day is done lads -  I surrender - I show the white flag -  I come out with my hands up.

Ok lads let it run as a plan site.  No jokes off thread - no jokes on thread.  No having a go at the Scots, English, American or Canadians, or Aussies or the Irish, or the Americans or the Kiwis, or Western Women, or the Danes or the French or the Dutch or the man from Isle of Man or the Chinese or the Americans  or Londoners in particular.  No subjects like eggs, shirts, dresses, squatties or anything else that I have annoyed people with.  And that means not from you or riff raff like me.  Nor from the Mods especially.

I'm going to have my dinner.

Nobody said you could not post on things that are considered humorous.  This is why we have an area of the forum dedicated to just these kinds of threads.  That section would be the campfire.

And there will always be some threads that one would accept there to be humour and jokes.  Take for example Ted and Shaun's thread about getting together in GZ.  With the common shirts being worn, it was screaming to have jokes made of it.  Using another example of how a thread can go sideways in a bad way, I will use Arnold's thread about his new life with Qing.  Somehow, this thread got talking about electricians stuff.

The squat toilet topic is of use to new members.  For myself, I had never heard of one, and obviously had never seen one, until I stumbled onto a blog from of a woman in China.  I posted questions about this, (a long time ago), and got the answers I needed.  This thread has long ago been buried over on the old facebook site.  It stands to reason that it is going to come up again.  And naturally, there is going to be some humour attached to it.  But it has to stay somewhat on topic.

If you think threads are being "hive off", maybe you can be a little more specific.  I am not personally aware of this trend, but I will look into it.  I did delete some posts from Han's thread about "sex".  The posts I deleted were in regard to one of the mods talking about closing the thread.  I felt this was not the right course of action, so I deleted his post, and all subsequent posts that were in regard to his posting.  All other posts on that thread I did not touch, because I felt it was an interesting subject, and was bringing on some good healthy debate.  It is an opportunity to understand the different brothers, and to see different peoples opinions on the subject.

Shaun...what occasions have threads been closed?  There are a few in the Site Feedback section that Irishman closed, because they are no longer being posted to, or have already been resolved.  In the past, the only other threads that were locked down, were ones that were going to cause major problems...where someone has gone after another person.  We have shut it down, while the mods debate what the next step should be.  I know in one instance, I wrote both members to explain why it was closed, the offending post deleted, and then the thread was re-opened.

I have attached a screenshot of the moderator logs, so you can see that rarely are threads deleted.  I hope this will satisfy you that we are not heavily moderating this forum.

I for one don't mind about the threads going slightly awry sometime it is needed to take away any arguemnet that loooks like brewing up...

Any threads that have been closed of mine, have been done because I asked for it to be closed...A mod saying keep on topic please is no hardship...Then the subject can get back to normal..

Chong I understand what you are saying and yes people do get off subject.  I am one who participates in it often.  Yes, we joke with each other a little.  A casual reminder is all that is necessary to get back on track.  But deleting posts is a little too far.  Ted mentioned in the sex post that he though things were getting a little too personal, I thought the same thing so I commented that I will not post anymore on the thread as my view were the ones that were offending others.  It was all deleted.  Why?  It wasn't necessary.  I don't think we want to become a site where have to conform to communistic type rule where we have to watch everything we say.

Lets find some middle ground here.  Split thread are OK except they need to be renamed.  Once on one of my threads everyone got off subject on the first page and all I said was "the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain."  Everyone got the message, a couple apologized and we got back on topic.  No one was offended.  But I do not agree with deleting post unless it is beyond vulgarity or threatening.  A PM from a mod would be helpful too.

It is not an easy subject or easy to administer and keep everyone happy but I can tell you that censorship will not work at all.

I agree. I PM a message to Rockycoon after I deleted one of his post with an explanation. You all can see who the MOD(s) are who's responsible for their respective threads. You can PM them with any issues.

Agree. We support Freedom Of Speech within limits ( as specified on the Forum rules for posting).

Now you're being sarcastic. Everything you mentioned above ... we haven't deleted ( unless it caused potential arguments ... i.e. political debates/ opinionated attacks on nationalities ). Have we ever deleted your Viagra jokes ??? A cheap shot at the MOD(s) isn't necessary.  Obviously, you don't see the point of view for the greater & the purpose of this Forum.

Martin,

My thread on the site feedback was closed down way before I was ready.  I was still having problems and it was not fixed until a few hours after it was closed even though Ronan said it looked like it had been fixed.  It had not.  I wasn't asked.  That same night some of my posts were deleted.  You mentioned one.

I just think it gets a little heavy handed at times otherwise I am good.  What really irked me was that I was struggling and I was shut down before it was resolved and that I said that it may have been me that was cause the issues on the sex thread.  Not one bit of the conversation changed my mind but I didn't like the way one person was making it so personal and not really dealing with the issue but rather chose to put words in my mouth that I never said so I bowed out.  There is no mention of that.  It didn't and still doesn't set well with me.

Anyway I will keep on posting.

Shaun

I deleted all the subsequent posts after Ted, because I thought it might confuse those that hadn't been following along.  If I erased Teds post, and the subsequent 4 or 5 posts after that were left...all talking to Ted about something that was no longer there...I felt this might confuse the readers.  That is why I erased those posts.

I posted one that Chong deleted, however when he wrote me, I understood and am sorry for it, as it did come out a little
strange....but I understand what the mods are doing and I understand what people on this site are saying, so I'll post
but not so much, so I don't take a chance of pissing people off.
But I do enjoy the jesting with willy, shaun and ted.
