Asian Versions of US Drivers Manuals
« on: July 18, 2014, 09:27:40 pm »
This is a list of popular Asian versions of the California drivers manual for those here with Asian spouses.

Chinese http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/foreign_hdbk/dl600C.pdf
Korean http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/foreign_hdbk/dl600K.pdf
Tagalog http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/foreign_hdbk/dl600T.pdf
Vietnamese http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/foreign_hdbk/dl600V.pdf

I will post more versions from different states when I can find them. I believe these will prove useful since the majority of the rules are the same state to state with minor differences occasionally.

I am sure the Colorado manual only comes in English and Spanish. They used to have a Chinese version of the test but there were too many copies of the official test floating around so they stopped. Now they must take the test in English but the state provides a translator.

I sent Fiona to a Chinese man to help her study for the written test and then She was driving tested by a Chinese woman who owned a driving school in Denver.  About 500 bucks in all but its all done and she has her license.

Today she drove herself about 30 miles to work and back. She was very pleased with herself.

Ok here is something to chew on. US discrimination law states the if you provide a benefit to one person of a minority then you must provide the same benefit to all other persons of other minorities. (paraphrased but you get the idea)
But the US and state government are the worst offenders of all. Although this is an English speaking country nearly all public document are printed in English and Spanish......What about the poor family from Zimbabwe? Vietnam? Ireland? Sweden?  get it? The government is providing preferential treatment to Spanish speakers!
Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Thanks, Robert.

This is a really good resource.  Like you said, the rules are probably very similar state to state, so I downloaded both of these states and I will forward it to Mei.

She already drives, but she has no sense of right of way.  It seems that in CHina the one beeping the most gets the right of way... ;D

Willy,
That's the price you pay in the USA to live in a good neighborhood that is relatively safe with a low crime rate. It is really funny to see the reactions when you tell a Chinese person you live 20 miles out from the closest city. They automatically assume you are a poor person who can not afford to reside in the city. It totally surprises them when they discover how much crime is in our cities and how much money it really does cost to afford a country estate away from the pollution and crime of the cities. Many cities in the US do not offer public transit on the scale that China offers so driving is almost a required skill in many areas of the USA if you plan to engage in any social activities/shopping/work alone. In most areas of the USA 30 miles transit back and forth to work is not unheard of, I know people who drive 4 hours daily back and forth to Atlanta to their jobs. I would find me some work closer myself, but that's their money and business not mine. I usually log about 75 miles daily on an average day myself, but I have to travel from plant to plant doing maintenance repairs so the company foots the bill for my daily travels.

P.S.  One thing to keep in mind also, just like almost everything else in China, drivers license can be purchased too, so do not assume automatically that your wife can drive just because they have a Chinese drivers license. In China for the right amount money paid to the right person you can have almost any type of license you desire. ???

My wife went down the driving school route and it took her six months before she passed everything.  ;)
She still won't drive outside the city though. ;D
Even so it sure scares me to hell every time she drives me anywhere in the city.   :'(

Here is a list of what languages that drivers exams are available in for all 50 states. May want to double check with your state though, because I have spotted a couple that are not up to date.
