Tartan skirts are popular in China I think. I've seen 3 of our Chinese students wearing them this week.

I have established my lady likes wearing short skirts. This is much more important than the suit issue .

Brett,

My last words on the suit thing.....

Your basing your statement on women ''liking men in suits'' on the western idea. Also Japan has always tried to emulate western ideas in formal dress, which is why you see so many in the Tokyo business world in suits. China as a whole has never emulated western formal business wear....

As Chong and others have stated, a smart pair of pants and a crisp white shirt, is more than enough for any of your meet and greet occasions, and even then you could find yourself over-dressed, and if you want to go the whole hog, there's always the tie!! ...hahaha!!

God Brett, this is like pulling teeth trying to convince you to forget the bloody suit!!  ..hahahaha!!

About the Suit thing . Brett , wearing a Suit among People wearing Casual Clothes will not gain you any point's there . All it's going to do make your Lady more likely uncomfortable and force her to be equally as formal looking , when NOT needed . Besides it would kind of embarrass me as well , standing there all alone in a Suit , way overdressed for the purpose to impress your Lady .
Well my three cent's anyway .

In fact, when I was in Shanghai and Gz, I never had any suit... just a shirt most of time, and only one time, a tie, when I was with Liyan :)
Man can easily forget about wearing a suit, first, because of people over there who aren't dressed like that, secondly, because of the weather, too ;)

So Brett !! go for a shirt if you prefer :) or just simple t shirts :)

Thanks guys. I've done some reading and I guess a suit would be too much for this time.

I think I will be wearing my Summer wardrobe and my lady will be wearing her Winter stuff! It reminds me of when I went to Rome in December and all the elegant ladies were wearing fur coats while I was walking around in a T shirt.

Anyways, I'm sure we'll be clothes shopping as I've pretty much seen my lady's entire wardrobe now !

Actually, I should correct my post ... I haven't had the right opportunity or "time" to wear my suit which I'll be doing in December ... 1) for the wedding dinner and 2) for the wedding photos [ they provide 4 changes of costumes, but I want to wear my suit also]. Scottish Rob is also correct in stating that wearing a suit is suitable for job interviews.

So, at some "time"/point/special occasion, you'll need a suit.

I have one suit in my wardrobe in China.  My lady has seen it and suggested that one evening I wear it.

I told her that I would be too hot in wearing it out in the evening warm hair.

She said that she thinks I will look sexy in it and we DO NOT have to go out at all.

Take your choice Brett is it a turn on or not?

Well throughout my life I have seen how women love to see a man in a suit :icon_cool:. I will reserve judgement until I see how loaded my suitcase is.

At the end of the day it is something I have to decide for myself. But my lady would certainly love to see me in my suit, and I want to appear very well dressed beside her, as she loves fashion and I imagine she will put a tremendous amount of thought and effort into dressing for our first meeting.

Anyway, sorry for this threadjacking - Sly have you got any news about your lady? Or any more photos from your trip to show us?

Chong,

Totally agree with you about Westerners wearing a suit at a Chinese wedding and the seperate wedding photo sessions. Also agree, that i guess a suit is suitable attire to wear at an interview.

Although, i must have conducted in excess of 30 interview sessions in my 8 years in China, with total numbers of applicants interviewed exceeding 200+. All being professional Engineers and junior Engineers that would have been office based, ...I can't honestly remember one applicant attending his interview in a suit!!

Don't get me wrong any of you, i like a good suit, and i look pretty nifty in one too!! ...lol!!!
I did actually wear a suit (and safari suits) fairly regularly in Hong Kong, but that was an entirely different environment, where British influences was very much prevalent at that time....

Brett,

If that's the case where your lady's into fashion ... bring your suit. You'll need a jacket for the Fall weather anyways. I'm sure that your lady will appreciate you looking 'debonnaire' for her.

Funny ... ever since this topic started, I have been noticing some men wearing suits, albeit mostly in the hotel. I assume that Beijing/Shanghai being more cosmospolitan cities would have more suits being worn as a daily wardrobe. Maybe 'White Dad' JimB or Si Fu Arnold can shed light on this. :icon_cool: :fi_lone_ranger:

Safari suit was an abomination invented by the Colonial Brits...sort of elegant YUK casual wear...went out of fashion in the late '60's !!!!

Sometimes was complete with short pants.....and long socks...sometimes with long pants.

Sort of "Africa in the early '30's !!!

Sorry David50...could'nt resist it:icon_cheesygrin::icon_cheesygrin:

ps...I still have 2 safari suits that I can't  face throwing away...reminder of different times :icon_cheesygrin::icon_cheesygrin:

Safari Suit ... a suit that attracts wild uncontrollable beasts ??? ... aka 'cougars' ... hehehe :icon_cool:

Ron,

If you're in HK, you can get a custom-tailor silk suit for a very reasonable cost. David probably knows a few tailors there.  See if they have an Italian silk material call ... MODESTO BERTOTTO Super Merino Extra Fine 120 . This would cost $ 2,000 in Canada ..... or anything ( i.e. Ermenegildo Zegna ) close to that. "120" is the thread count. Most suits are "100". The extra "20" means that it woven more thus the finer feel. Ask to see his highest thread count material and feel the difference from a regular suit.

Chong you ask me to . On my four Trip now , I have only seen Men in Suite's on my first Trip . Because I was staying at the Tanfu Business Hotel in Pudong . There , the Men even wore the Suit's for Breakfast , that is something you'll never in your Lifetime see me wearing in the morning . I like to get dressed up and look good for my Lady , but it has to be mutual where everybody is Formal . Otherwise it's Jean's or Short's . Here .. there .. everywhere . Haha

Sorry Chong

As an Australian Wool expert, I must tell you that 120 super merino extra fine refers to the wool diameter. This is 120 micron. Only about 1% of the Australian Merino wool is clipped at 120 microns. Thus only the finest cloth is made from this wool...Zegna, Versace, and of course Saville Row
