Title: My trip to Guangzhou - reloaded
Post by: Irishman on October 31, 2009, 10:10:19 am
Hey folks, its that time again, my third trip to China, back to the beginning.

My first trip was a bit of an epic adventure and I'm meeting the same people again. In some ways its nice to be going back to a city I know as I already know the places I like and things i like to do there. However it does take away the wonder of it all a little, but third trip and all, that was probably going to happen anyhow.

I'm going to meet Ling (1) again, we parted on good terms and the long distance thing didn't really work out but I never got closure, she was extremely upset when I cancelled my visit to see her last June even though we were not really communicating on msn very well. When I was with her last time it was very nice and felt natural, i have to see if there is a chance or live with the "what ifs" for the rest of my life and I am not a "what if" type of guy.

I know a couple of other ladies there as friends from my first trip and even if things don't work out with Ling I know I'll have a good trip with many laughs and they will take care of me regardless.

This time I have to bring gifts for three ladies which is proving the most difficult thing to do, cant buy them all the same stuff! and I need some room for clothes too, a good dilemma.

I fly out on Wednesday afternoon and arrive in Guangzhou Thursday afternoon. Ling has booked me into a hotel in the city centre this time which will be convenient as the Metro underground system is really the best way to get around and she assures me there is a stop beside the hotel.
Last time i stayed near her apartment and had to rely on the bus's which was hard as they are always packed, and all the writing is in Chinese unlike the Metro, so I never knew if I was going away or towards the hotel when I got one!!

I also hope to hook up with Martin and Zhifang there, Guangzhou better order in more dumpling supplies!

Yes best wishes for you. You are also globe trotting quite frequently. I can understand what you mean about returning to familiar places. I find seeing the same streets and faces more comforting, and the shock of alien environs less daughting now.

Good luck you globe trotting, leaping leprechaun. May there be a pot of gold at the end of your rainbow.

This is my third trip this year, hopefully it's the best one.
Martin don't worry, I have Zhifang's number saved, I'm really looking forward to meeting your two ladies! ;)

Shirts are ironed (far to many..is 10 shirts for 2 weeks excessive?!!), pants are folded and various electronic equipment are charging up - phone, shaver, camera, besta x2, chinese mobile, hair trimmer, laptop, toothbrush ...how did people travel without these essentials before?!!

Its funny the clothes were the easy part of packing, the nerdy electronic stuff is my last minute ..my camera has a firmware update i've been putting off ..will do once its battery is recharged, I gotta transfer some movies and tv shows to the laptop to watch during the torture that is the long flight there, I dont do sitting in one spot for 14 hours well..i have always been a little (ok a lot) hyperactive and the flights drive me close to stir crazy.
I booked an aisle seat this time, i made the mistake of booking windows seats last time and I clearly pissed the aisle people off as i got up for my hourly stroll around the plane.
They do dim the lights and up the temperature after dinner, but I'm running on adrenalin..I'm going to a crazy eastern country, i don't speak the lingo, they don't speak my lingo, and they don't use a knife and fork and crap standing up..and I'm gonna meet a lovely exotic looking lady there for the first time..sleep...no way!!

I'm going to meet up with Ling..who i met first visit to China in February, and she is very lovely, she is my moon shot, my 11/10..looks wise at least. She told me she doesn't put her picture on msn because she gets to many pms from men if she does and i believe that, but her personality..am not so sure.

I have a backup plan that maybe should be the main plan, time will tell.

I'm flying to China tomorrow and i can't sit still!!

I hate the flights also. If i had the money, I would fly business class.  That is the only way to fly there.  Good luck irish and as always if you need anything in Beijing, let me know and we can handle it.  I am envious also.  i miss my wife.

Title: RE: My trip to Guangzhou - reloaded
Post by: Irishman on November 05, 2009, 12:40:16 pm
So I have finally arrived after a marathon trip to Guangzhou. I had originally booked non refundable tickets to Beijing to meet Ling (2) long in advance but as you all know that didnt work out so tacked on a cheap return flight to Beijing in ctrip so added about and extra 5 hours over normal to the journey.
The flights themselves went like clockwork. I flew Air France on the way over and the food was really great. Pity the hostesses were mostly male so no window shopping there! They were very friendly and happy to help so would definitely use Air France again.
The flight from Beijing to Guangzhou was with Air China had the pretty hostesses but awful food and no in flight entertainment. I did a long haul flight with them before and it was the same, for a short three hour flight its ok, but long haul, you need a decent cinema system, food and plentiful drinks (soft, juice water) to stop going stir crazy. Did I mention how good the Air France food was already??
Qatar Airways still reigns supreme - fantastic food, entertainment and eye candy, the complete package!! And one I hope to be using in future flights to Guangzhou.

Ok, with the boring flight details over lets get into the story. So somewhere over Russia during a whizzbreak i took a cheeky look at my China Mobile phone to see if I was getting any signal and I was surprised to see the battery strength down to two bars, that little fella usually went about two or three days before that happened before and I only recharged it last night..So when the plane landed I thought I'd give Ling a victory ring..but the blasted battery was coming up low charge so I couldn't use the phone.

Now I had a slight moment of panic - landing in Guangzhou where next to nobody speaks conversational English without anyone to meet you at the airport which is not connected to by a underground train system and a bus system that's indecipherable to westerners as everything is written in Chinese writing (not Pinyin) and having a hotel booking for a place you have only a vague idea as to location is pretty daunting.

So then the tech side kicked in, problem solving is what I'm fairly good at. My laptop had one hour of charge left, my China Mobile charger has a usb in to the cable that plugs into the charger so maybe I can make a call with my laptop battery charging the phone, messy but should be doable in an an emergency.
Then I remembered I have a cooked rom on my HTC Tytn 2 phone which has most global networks built in..so theoretically i just need to put my Chinese sim in there choose China Mobile, should work great except my phone wont display Chinese characters..well thats no biggie for the moment as I cant read them anyway.
So poped it in, choose China mobile adrenalin flooding my veins with the sweet snifter of victory over overwhelming odds where lesser men would have failed...alas..I got the blasted message I got on landing in Tianjin, this sim is expired...agghhhhhhhhhhhh!!

OK

My flight is being called , I'll figure it would when i land in Guangzhou.
On landing in Guangzhou I went up to one of those phone kiosks and asked for a prepay sim and as luck would have it the girl actually understood me!! 100RMB, comes with 65RMB credit...probably able to get that margin smaller but fellas believe me i would have paid 90:10!!
So whacked that sucker in, clarified which network its was on (the card didnt say in Pinyin - China Unicom) chose that on the phone, called Ling, heard some stupid super happy music some Chinese (I'm thinking oh crap what now) then a message in English saying thanking for choosing China Unicom and then at last i heard Lings regular ring sound (the welcome message only happened the first call). It was sweet relief when i heard her voice (barely) above the noise of Guangzhou's horn happy taxi and bus drivers outside.

She booked me into the Hanting Express Inn which is right opposite TeeMall almost :) and dead smack centre of town, perfect location for me. Told me to get the bus to Tianhe dasha. So I eventually found a bus that went to Tianhe Hotel and Zhonshen Plaza which I was able to find on the map and looked to be pretty close to the area I thought she was talking about. I called her and said i cannot find this Tianhe dasha place and I'm taking this bus and i'll then get a taxi from there to meet her as its gotta be close. I was outside at this time and noise of car horn beeping was ridiculous so couldn't really hear Ling at all.
So I got the 6A bus from our side the international arrivals area which cost 20RMB (a taxi would be 100+).

Bags packed and in the comfort of the bus I texted Ling, she said this dasha place is the ticket termainal beside the Tianhe hotel. Sure enough the girl conductor bellowed out "Tianhe dasha" when we got there which would be mighty confusing to most laowai but not this one!

Lings office is right around the corner from there so called her once I realised I recognised the place and that we were close.

So I got of the bus and within a minute or so Ling arrived. I had to catch my breath, she truly is even more beautiful than I remembered her.
She keep looking at me with her lovely eyes and was clearly delighted to see me. There was no western style hugging etc, but there is water under the bridge here and I'm just going to remain relaxed an let things take their course.
So we walked the short distance to my hotel(the bus is one side to Teemall and the hotel the other literally, its utterly perfect, and at 209 RMB per night for a basic room with double bed , broadband and a window I am not gonna complain, wont be in the room most of the time anyhow and its all i need or want.
Its got one for those great hard Chinese mattresses that i love, I used to have a bad back in my youth and have a rock hard mattress sorted that out so much so not that i cannot sleep well in a soft bed and the harder it gets the better I sleep, western beds dont have a patch one on these Chinese ones.

So we went up to the room, no there was no snogging..i was smelly and dog tired from the days travel so I gave her some little gifts i had bought for her which she was delighted with.
She watched tv and i had a quick shower and change into fresh clothes.
We then went out to dinner in a nice restaurant. I had forgotten how Ling makes a fuss in a restaurant, if the seating isnt right, the table just where it gives best privacy and or view outside she wont take no for an answer, its funny and I just let her do her thing and we usually end up with great seats!

So that done she ordered after quizzing me what i felt like - noodles, something spicy and hot..so various stuff arrived which i can only say was there was frogs legs, pork thingys and beef, and some wildly hot chillies...as usually describing Chinese food is harder than eatng it haha. I remember first time in Guangzhou i could barely eat the hot stuf and by the last day nothing tasted particularly hot. Well same today, my nostils and tongue were fried today, fabbo, i loved i!
No doubt in a few days the pollution will have coated my taste buds sufficiently to dampen out the incredible heat again ..or i'll just adapt, its good either way :)

Ling and I chatted about this and that and the food, it was a little like starting agan but this time was obvious warmth and friendliness there from the beginning. She kept giving me those lazer beam looks that just swallow me up whole.  It was nice. There was some left over so she got a doggie bag and she then took me to get my Guangzhou travel card topped up , nice little detail.
She has training tomorrow morning then has to work a regular day after that.. She wants to meet me for lunch after training and then wants me to come to her with her to her yoga classes this week. Her credit card company gave her a weks worth of free classes and she has been saving them up to do with someone so she would like me to come along Apparently there are other laowai there so i wont feel like a complete eejit there. Whadda i care, the only one there that i know or who will likely ever know me is Ling so its all good.
We walked around for a bit after that, Guangzhou has changed, its is noticeably cleaner to my eye and the front of TeeMall has a new incredibly bright façade, i'll attach a pic here, its fabbo. There also  a weird Samsung water display that bobbles water in waves and colours, its very strange and beautiful at the same time.

It was nice that Ling and I stood right beside each other and there was a lot of touchy feely stuff, but no hand holding. I think I could have initiated it but I don't want to rush this along, I need to be sure about her, I am going to take this at my own pace and not rush anything.

I am going to meet the friend that introduced me and Ling initially (shes more of a friend of a friend) as i promised her chocolates so I must deliver :) (I got her some nice French and Belgium chocs as well as some Irish ones of course).

So all is good with the world...well..fellas there is one more detail i haven't mentioned..and i dunno what is the best way to describe it so i'll just write it down.
The girl that introduced me and Ling also introduced me to another girl when Ling 2 and I didn't work out and that girl and I have been getting on great..shes a translated for a bank and is beautiful, is almost perfectly fluent in English and is clearly extremely smart. She is a lot younger than me though , shes 26 and i'm 38 almost 39 (January) .

First thing I saw in my inbox this evening was a letter from her saying welcome to Guangzhou and when was I going to see her....
She knows what i look like (webcam) and we have great meaningful conversations on msn, I cant help wondering if maybe she is better long term material, though maybe i am selling Ling short there - she is much closer to my age - 32, and when I am with her she goes out of her way to take care of me.

I dunno whether I should come clean with this second girl or not, she is going to think it weird that I flew 6000 miles to her home town and dont want to see her immediately. I told her that today i'd not be up for anything but sleep  on arrival..which is partially true..but am running adrenalin and Chinese "Great Wall" red wine right now.

Since your currently undecided I would spend some time with the second girl and then decide from there. I won't worry about the age factor. I spent time with 2 other girls when I was in China before deciding on my current wife. My wife was understanding on me for seeing the other 2 as she said it was normal since i wanted to be sure. Now she give me odd looks or comments if i even look at a lady to long. She know its normal for a guy but its her way of saying "Don't even think about it".

Your not committed to any yet sooo see who you want when you want.

Just had lunch/breakfast with Ling.
Four courses, al equally delicious and came to the princely sum of 24 RMB.
I.m writing this in Starbucks in Teemall sipping my Grande Americano which cost the same as the entire meal with Ling, such a contrast.
I was going to walk Ling back to her office (she met me outside the hotel ) but she said she didn't want to be seen with a foreigner by her colleagues as they would make fun of her. I thought that really strange and I was a bit weirded out by it truth be told, I need to mull over that a bit I think, that was not my experience in the past. Personally this wuldnt bother me here or if the situation was reversed, hmm, one to think about.

I am going to meet up with the other lady this evening I think and see if there is any real chemistry.

Sometimes it's not being seen with a foreigner that is the problem.  Often I find it is the teasing by the co-workers that is the problem.  Why would you want to put up with the friendly ribbing.  I refuse to mention to any of my friends or co-workers whether I am talking to a chinese girl because I know the ribbing I would get from them...even if it is in good natured fun.  When I'm busy, I don't have time to put up with it.

It looks like the Irishman is going after my recently vacated position.

At least I never went out with two on the same day!!! Well not in the same city at least.  Well to be honest - not in the same hotel.

Ok, what and afternoon and evening its been, tomorrow is going to be a rollercoaster for sure, more on that later..

So while I was in Starbucks I had msn running and how should pop up but the other lady "Sunny" she was excited to know that i was in Guangzhou and told me her friend Yamaha (who is a good friend from my first visit here) works near the Starbucks and was going to pop over to see me so i was ordered not to budge!!

So Yamaha came along and we had a great conversation. I talked to her about the situation with Sunny and Ling and that I didnt know what to do. She suggested meeting Sunny first and then make a informed decision.
Ling was going to be working until 20:00 this evening anyhow and i had already told her that i was going to see Yamaha who she apparently doesnt really like that much so would be fine with me seeing her by myself, Yamaha is married to an American so she doesnt see any threat from that direction.
Yamaha then helped me buy a new battery for my Chinese phone and then brought me to see her office and introduced me to just about every one including the boss there!..spot a difference to earlier? Yamaha has a very good job in a big multinational insurance company..yet she was happy to introduce her Irish friend to all her colleagues and boss....is Ling ashamed of me?

So Yamaha and I were on the way to meet Sunny when Ling texted me to say that she actually was able to get off work today at 18:00 so would meet me then at the hotel...oh crap!!

Sunny was already in a train on the way to see me and Yamaha..what to do. I suggested calling it off and Yamaha would tell Sunny the truth. She suggested saying instead that I was with her and met her boss and workmates and we were now going to dinner together...slight bending of the truth but not an outright lie. She called Ling and told her this and I texted Ling (Ling's English isnt the best and it would have been real hard to explain that to her, she reads much beter than she speaks).

So we waited at the Metro for Sunny to arrive, i was shaking a little with anxiety.
Finally Sunny showed up and I recognised her in the crowd before Yamaha, she was dress in an elegant form hugging dress and tights and medium sized heeled shoes and held herself with poise, man...it just about blew me away, she's utterly beautiful!! She speaks English with that incredible sexy lightly Chinese accent which I just love. We got a taxi together and went to a real nice Chinese restaurant where I ate snails for the first time - very spicy and various other indescribable things ha! Sunny and Yamaha are obviously good friends and were great to be with, It was great being able to talk to someone here natuarally.
The evening seemed to go well and she wanted to know what I'm doing tomorrow and could she come along too at the end of the night...
Yamaha thought this hilarious and the little minx of course chimed in and suggested that this was a great idea!! Yamaha knows me well and knows Ling too, she thinks Sunny is a better match for me and doesnt beat around the bush telling me that.

So I agreed to meet Sunny tomorrow afternoon, I told her I was going to sleep in late as the time difference is hard to adjust to. However I'm going to have to tell Ling that it really is over. Ling is beautiful but there is little conversation and that is usually about the food we are eating or light stuff, never anything of consequence. I had to come here and make sure that my feelings back home were the same as here but the rebuke about her office mates seeing her with me is the final straw i think. She is lovely and beautiful and probably would marry me i think because she wants a western husband, but she wont love me and thats not enough.

Its going to be a rough morning telling her this but i must, maybe its better to do over msn tonight, i dunno, I'm writing this down now first because as soon as i start msn I know i'll have three ladies on right away .

I do feel like a cad doing this to her, but its right for both of us i think. Sunny speaks better English, she can hold a conversation, and frankly comes across as more classy to me. I just love the way she holds her poise, and her eyes are just like laser beams into my heart, i genuinely feel a little flutter when she turns those beams in my direction.
Tomorrow evening Yamaha is throwing a dinner party for her friends and of course Sunny and I are invited so that will be fun.
I am dreading the morning.
My hotel stay is ending tomorrow, so I think though the room is a bit basic and small , it is a great location so I'll just prolong the stay rather than have the hassle of moving after all the emotion of breaking up with Ling.

This city is like a pro boxer, its keeps on throwing the punches, but I am not going down!

I'm going to take it slow with Sunny and try to be romantic and let things happen normally, I'm not going to go on about marriage to her on this trip at all, so I will be back to Guangzhou, its going to take as long as it takes, but I've learned a lot in the last year and made many mistakes. Sunny feels like a good fit, the best yet, so lets see where this adventure leads me this time.

NOW you know in your heart mate.  That's the key to all this online dating experience. Well that's my view:icon_biggrin:

The minute you mentioned about Ling not wanting to be seen with you, :@ I figured there and then.  For F...s sake you went all the way there and she would get embaressed to be seen with you!!!.

RIGHT DECISION BROTHER...

I had the same experience with my wife telling me not to hold her hands when we got near her apartment when I first meet her. Her friends will ask her all sort of questions if seen and will ask some more if they don't see me with her when I leave China. That I can understand why Ling told you not to walk her back to the office.   Was easy for Yamaha to introduce you to her work colleges since she was married and work at a multinational company so she didn't have to explain much. Good thing you decided to see Sunny as I said in my earlier post that you should see the other lady since you were undecided. Sounds like you have much more in common with Sunny and communication with her is alot better. I agree with you to let Ling go and concentrate on Sunny.

On behalf of the members I'm requesting pictures of Sunny and Yamaha.

Thanks guys, I just had long conversation with Ling 2 over msn , we still chat as friends, i am not a monster and we both still enjoy a old heart to heart as friends.. She says that if Ling liked me truly she would be happy to introduce me to her colleagues not embarrassed, and i am sure she is right.

Yamaha introduced me to her boss, Ling reckons that Yamaha is happy to have me as a friend and to introduce me to the people that matter to her as a result. Yamaha knows her American husband awaits her and is comfortable as a result having laowai friends, her husband Jon is from Portland MI (Maine???) she proudly showed me pics of her American visa application and of course of them together in the traditional Chinese wedding gear haahah (i didnt laugh!!!)l told her to give Jon our address as there are many other guys like him from America waiting on their sweethearts to get their visa also.

I'm moving on tomorrow, time here is too precious to waste, if it is slow time with Sunny then thats fine, but it is Sunny time :)

I'm dreading and anticipating the dawn, its gonna be a big day.

Ummm ... Irish Brother ... I have FIRST DIBS on the name "Sunny" on this Forum as I met my "Sunny" on July 9th. So you have to call your Sunny ... Sunny2 / Sunny II / Sunny from GZ / Sunny 'that can speak English' better than the original Sunny.

Glad to hear things are going well with your Sunny. You gave Ling another chance and she blew it. Time to move forward. Hope she doesn't blow a gasket.

Wow, Irishman that's a great story. You really know how to tell them. There is a real flow to them. There's a good balance between description and commentary. You're a real storyteller. Sometimes, for pleasure, I read through one of your threads from the beginning, and it always is so interesting, and leaves me envious about your wit, charm and abilities.

I think you're doing the right thing. I think if it's not perfect, then it's not good enough. You can tell when someone loves you and when they don't. Someone who loves you makes a big effort to make you happy. Of course it isn't just a one way street, I make a big effort for the woman I love. And it isn't that I sit down each day and weigh up who has done more or less, but after a while, you know what's going on.

It's a bit like a game of see-saw, and there's some back and forth, but if someone doesn't want to play, and just wants to receive and never give, then plainly it just doesn't work.

I don't like to show off my good fortune or anything, but I was really touched last night. I had a really hard day and I was not sure when I was getting home. So my darling YaYa said to me, that she wanted to cheer me up by having a conversation with me on Skype. I said I wasn't sure when I was back. So she told me that she would wait at home until I got back. I told her that I felt bad that she had just sat about at home, waiting for me to get back. She said she was honoured to wait for me, and it was just really lovely to find her there at the end of the day. I even got some kisses through the web cam. I don't know if anyone has received air kisses through a web cam, but it just made me laugh and laugh.

Which is all a long way around to say that if she does not glow with happiness when she sees you, then it seems to me, it hasn't happened yet for her, or might never. It doesn't sound like Ling glows with happiness when she sees you, or talks to you, and so maybe it is indeed time for a sunny girl.

Danny

Like all his countrymen the Irishman has a way with words and it is great following his time in Guangzhou with him.

I am with you Danny - when you find the one that is right for you then you will know.  If you have to put up questions or make excuse for someone then sorry it is not so firm as you may have thought.     I have no doubts that I have found the right one at last.  Oh yes I have had many beauties here but this one has shown over the past two months just how well she will look after me.

The 1 thing everyone is forgetting , until you have been to China , it is like pissing into the wind , China  is not like any other country and indeed Chinese women are , not like any in  other country , so pick a city and maybe a lady and go see , and get rid of the theory , that is the one message that comes through the thousands of postings on this forum , your love of your life might not be right for you the first time , but you will not be alone for more than 24 hours , if you use your brains , regards Ying and Robert .

To have reached the end of the road, when it's unmistakeable, an ending to all the doubts and worries and hopes and dreams you have about a relationship, this is sometimes the best possible thing that you can receive from a woman.

Talking as someone who has loved a woman a great deal more than she loved me for more than a year, I wish I had known it wasn't going to work out, earlier rather than later. But at least I know now. I was told to my face. And that's what you've recieved. It's a good thing.

I think the worst possible would be for it to just drag along for months and months, making yourself and your woman as miserable as can be.

I know you will not feel this right now, but it's sometimes a real good thing what you've received.

You can't go back now, you've burnt your bridges and you're free indeed. So good luck. It'll be just fine.

During coffee in Starbucks this morning I chatted to Sunny on QQ and agreed to meet her after work (she works a half day on Saturdays). So took the metro to Panyue Square where she works close by and had another coffee in a nice restaurant and waited fro her to join me. As ever she looked lovely and we had a nice lunch there and then went to visit Shamian Island where she hadn't actually visited herself before.
What a strange place!!
Old European style building and ladies everywhere  getting photographed , it was surreal, models and brides every where, its clearly very different to the rest of the city.
There are loads of small museums/antique stores and we visited a few, in one of they places they had pictures made from donkey skins and then painted, weird !! We spent a very pleasant couple of hours there and then had some fruit drinks at a riverside place (Pearl River). She also thought me how to do Tai Chi..its involves a watermelon story haha, you would have to see it to get it haha. There were people swimming in the Pearl river and old guys doing the Tai Chi and as usual in China, where ever there is a green area people just dont loaf around they do stuff.
There as old ladies singing in the old Chinese style while old folk shuffled around dancing to it, there was people playing tennis, there were men fishing in the river, there was boats going up and down. It was pretty romantic I suppose.
When ever I look at Sunny she breaks out into a big smile as do I, so there is the beginnings of something there I think.
After that we took the metro to meet up with Yamaha (my friend that introduced me to her).
The dinner party turned out to be a private room in an gigantic restaurant, it must have been about 5 storeys high with hundreds of private rooms and massive open plan dining areas. Stunningly beautiful girls in traditional clothing shouted out greetings and waiters literally ran around ferrying food around the place, i can only imagine what the kitchen was like. There were other coordinators with earpieces and mikes that constantly talked coordinating the frenetic activity, I've never seen anything quite like it, there must have been around 1000 if not more people dining there at any one time.

So anyhow, Sunny knew which room was booked and we were directed there by the army of fresh faced , traditionally clothed, did i mention stunningly beautiful?!, girls.
In the room was Yamaha and two men from her company, one spoke pretty good English so its was very interesting. I was clearly the important guest as as the array of foods arrived I was always the first one they wanted to try the food. The food was served onto a rotating glass table so it was easy to swing a dish you liked right around to you. My chopstick skills no longer make Chinese laugh haha, they were very impressed!
One of the dishes in particular they got very excited about when it came. There was a hushed silence and they all stared at me to see would i eat it. It was a brown circular thing, it tasted kinda fatty but like pork, quite nice.
I asked Sunny why they all looked at me eating it  and they all burst into conspirational laughter. They wouldn't tell me what it is, and apparently they wont tell me what it is until I'm going home haha. I'm guess its pig intestine or something i wouldn't normally touch with a bargepole, but when in Rome do as ... I didnt recognise anything on the table, noodles were apparently actually mushrooms and it went on like that, i have given up even trying to guess, i just shove it in my gob and see if I like the taste. After eating snails out of their shells (they give you a glove to hold the shell and a wooden steak to stab into the flesh and pull from the shell, you then bite of the brown end and leave behind the white gooey bit) last night there is no going back at this stage!

So dinner was very enjoyable and Yamaha kept talking to Sunny looking of at me and the two of them would then burst out laughing and glance at me every so often, haha.
Yamaha's two male colleagues from work paid for the dinner and we all then went to "foot massage" (Sunny said I should pay for the foot massage which seemed fair enough).
Again this place is hard to describe, multiple floors with dimply lit spotless rooms , water fountains, stone sculptures and girls with microphones and earpieces coordinating it all.
Fellas...you need to experience this to believe it.
All five of us went into our room , and took a chair each and watched a huge plasma screen with some ping pong. It was China versus Japan and China was winning and the men were loving it, cheering every point China won!!
Then spot on the turn of the hour, five gorgeous girls came into the room in a kind of parade armed with towels and other bits and bobs, one to a man or woman.
So, my beauty enthusiastically washed my feet, rolled up my trousers to the knees and then rubbed moisturiser in and then basically tortured the soles of my feet hahh. However once that was done she did my neck shoulders and back and then told me to sit in front of her and she then pulled me back down unto her chest and massaged my eyebrows, rubbed my earlobes, and rubbed my forehead and face and scalp for a while, fellas, this as not the most unpleasant experience I ever had let me tell you!!

She then did the upper part of my lgs and all I kept doing was a Homer Simpson "think unsexy thoughts, think unsexy thoughts, think unsexy thoughts etc" ...it was touch and good but my modesty was preserved just about haha.

After all that (about an hour) they raped scalding hot towels around our feet for a few minutes and then washed them again. Interestingly my masseuse told Sunny that i had a tender spot in my right foot that corresponds to my kidney, i heard her say "bu hao" (not good) and she then jabbed the point to demonstrate to Sunny and I of course jumped much to Sunny and her amusement. Sunny takes this stuff seriously and said I should have my doctor check my kidneys for problems. I'm not sure i believe it but I will mention to my doc and see what she says, i am due cholesterol tests anyhow so they can test the blood for a bunch of other stuf at the same time.
After the foot massage I paid for it and it only came to 275 RMB for all five of us, great value, I would normally spend around that on dinner just for me and one lady

The men their ways after that and as it was now about 22:30 the ladies took the train in one direction and I the other.

Sunny is going to help me check into a new hotel that she says is better value and nicer rooms tomorrow morning. We are going to do the Pearl river cruise tomorrow evening and I'm going to see if a bit of hand holding can be initiated there :) After moving hotel i'm not sure what we will do but it will be together so it will be fine. I find Sunny very interesting and intellectual, which really appeals to me, she can hold a conversation thats interesting and I dont constantly have to be the one starting the conversation as was the case with Ling 2. She doesnt mind at all the slight touches i make now and again to see if she flinches, in the metro she sat right beside me leg to leg shoulder to shoulder.
Yamaha has told me not not to force it with Sunny - she is thoughtful and wont be rushed into anything.
To be honest thats perfectly fine with me, i've learned from the past that sometimes you have to walk even when you want to run. On the Pearl river cruise is going for hand hold time I think, kissing, if it happens, might be about a week i think if even then. Sunny doesn't have a chnlove profile but knows all about chnlove, I'll expand more on that later, now isnt the time.

Ling left some documents in my bag and texted  that she wants them back, i know that meeting isnt going to be pleasant, I know where she works so might just ask Yamaha to give them to the front desk there as she works near the building, there's no point in me trying to do this as there are many companies in the sky scraper Ling works in and only one front reception not used to dealing with laowai.

So I wont be getting engaged this trip, but i will hopefully have made a new friend and the beginning of something great, I've also finally broken with Ling 1 and now know that it was the right thing to do so no regrets.
I've two weeks left to get to know Sunny well, its started off great, hopefully there will be tears on the way home :)

My wife lives near Shamian Island.  I was quite intrigued with the place.  Your details brought a lot of memories, expecially the part of walking along the Pearl.

Great trip update Irishman.  Good to see things are going along well for you, and you are developing a nice friendship with Sunny.

Hey Chong, did Sunny tell you that she was going to Guanzghou this week to meet some Irish guy?  Oh wait...she told me to tell you...I might have forgotten to tell you earlier.

Great story as always Irish, but how about some pics of the lovely classy Sunny? You know we are all pic a holics, especially when pretty chinese ladies are the subject.  Also of course our best wishes for an even better next two weeks and if things keep going the way they are now I am quite sure tears will be falling from more that one set of eyes at the airport when you fly back to Ireland.  Notice I didnt say back home?  For me after my first trip, home was and forever will be wherever Zhen is.  With any luck you will feel the same about Sunny.

Have a fantastic time,

In the lilt of Irish laughter

All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,

What a day...

Started with Ling asking me for a document she left in my bag, I checked and sure enough there was one in there, so went to meet her early after Starbucks and gave that to her, I could see she was barely holding back the tears as was i, we only maybe spoke three or four words.
I went back to the hotel and cried for a while, I had a long history with this girl and its a lie to say there still isnt feeling between us, but it would never work.

Thankfully it was going to be another couple of hours before meeting with Sunny to move to the new hotel that Yamaha had sorted out for me.

So i dozed in bed and calmed myself down.
Sunny brought me to the new hotel and OMG is all i can say!!!! Its palatial, its really a fancy apartment!!! Its got a cooker, a washing machine, a fridge freezer, microwave, a kingsize bed room come living room on the 25th floor with a huge window that you can stand on the sill its so insanely big.  Yamaha seems to know people in places everywhere and organised this for me at 260 RMB a night on condition that it was cash up front.
The brochure prices this room at 880RMB a night.....lets just say I owe her bigtime.
Its about a 10 minute brisk walk to the metro in the city centre, this area is all financial type buildings and posh apartment skyscrapers, I'm living it up !

We went for lunch and Yamaha rang and chattted to Sunny and then me, she said if Sunny didnt like me don't worry, she will set me up with another date, my heart sank, I assumed Sunny had told her it wasn't happening for her....and she was trying to let me know as gently as possibly.
I didn't say anything to Sunny but felt a bit sick and depressed what with the mornings events with Ling and all.. Anyhow, i was going to keep a brave face and see if i could turn it around.

We then went to find painting shops, but compared to Tianjin everything here is about five times the price with paintings so I didn't get any. It was a long walk to there and we had another few hours to go until the prebooked Pearl River cruise, so I suggested checking out a movie. There was a theatre real close by as luck would have it..little did I know it but this spur of the moment decision may have just changed my life...

We bought tickets to see "Knowing" as it was starting soon and was in English with Chinese subtitles so that suited us both just fine. We went into the wrong screen by mistake and stumbled around in the dark, it looked like it was mid movie so I asked Sunny to ask the person beside her if we had missed the start, apparently it was over an hour into it, we stumbled out in the darkness, and after Sunny asking a load of attendants for help we found the right screen and settled down to watch the movie. I was feeling in the dumps and a bit sick to my stomach in the dark ...little did I know what was coming...
This movies has a few BOO!!! type moments with the dramatic backing track building up the tension, at one moment Sunny let out a yelp and buried her head in my shoulder, as if afraid to watch, i took her hand said I'd keep her safe (corney I know but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do). I love this movie. She held my hand and at the scary bits she squeezed it tight and her head never left my shoulder and my other hand rested on one of her legs. This ain't a typical date movie, but fellas, it got the job done!!

The ice was broken, the should I or shouldn't I go for gold and grab her hand fretting was done. She took my hand as we left the theater when I offered it with a shy smile and we were stuck together for the rest of the night. There was another hour to the cruise so we just sat on a bench by the Pearl river and fooled about a bit and talked about relationships and stuff, much more personal than the superficial small talk before. She read my palms and apparently I earn good money but don't know how to save it (true enough), i will live a long life and have a long marriage, she wont earn much money but will have a long life and marriage and is good with money so we are a good match I declared to giggles and a playful shove of the shoulder.

The time came for the Pearl river cruise, last time I had got no pictures because my camera battery was flat this time it was because Sunny said she would rather sit inside with me (and nuzzle into my shoulder and examine my hands and arms)! Man oh man was this day turned around just great! I was on top of the world.
It was near 22:30 now so we just about caught the last metro back to our places. I held her back at the escalator until everyone had passed then held her close and gave her a surprise peck on the cheek and playful flick of the butt, that got a huge smile and laugh and we went out ways home.

I'm meeting up with Yamaha for lunch, no doubt she will want to know all the gory details and for all her help the least I can do for her is buy her lunch. Yamaha said she was brining a friend with her that was single if I was interested...I was a bit surprised then the penny dropped about earlier .. Sunny doesn't want me to tell Yamaha about our romance just yet as the whole of Guangzhou will know right away apparently as Yamaha has a lot of friends haha and I was just to say we were doing well as friends...so shes been telling Yamaha this and Yamaha reads this as her not being interested and being my friend wants to set me up with someone else...haha, funny problem to have. I'm gonna tell Yamaha that I like Sunny and that I am not gonna give up the fight, Yamaha is a friend and even if she thinks its foolish will respect this and not interfere.

So, my rocket has just left the touchpad!

Good going Irish, and as always well written.
tell her:
Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain.
Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain.

Oh, the dark days are done, and the bright days are here,
My sunny one shines so sincere,
Oh, Sunny one so true, I love you.

Pretty much guarantee she has not heard that song from the 60's. Here is the rest
Sunny, thank you for the sunshine bouquet.
Sunny, thank you for the love you've brought my way.

You gave to me your all and all,
Now I feel ten feet tall,
Oh, Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, thank you for the truth you've let me see.
Sunny, thank you for the facts from A to Z.

My life was torn like wind blown sand,
Then a rock was formed when we held hands.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

Sunny, thank you for that smile upon your face.
Sunny, thank you for that gleam that flows with grace.

You're my spark of nature's fire,
You're my sweet complete desire.
Sunny one so true, I love you.

So now I'm  up  decide to check out the local "FamilyMart" convenience store. I got an empty fridge and a hungry stomach.

So I get some water and some beers and then I discover that they do fresh prepacked meals alo, at silly prices..check out the pics below, each meal cost about one euro!!!!

I just ate the second one, which had a bowl of rice on the bottom and peppered spicy beef in sauce with onions and carrots , green beans in a chili sauce and chili chicken , it was great after i nukked it nice and hot in my microwave!!

This is living, oh and I also just chatted to Sunny in qq, don't anyone dare snap their fingers three times!!

Willy, here is the website - http://www.flsdn.com/

Interesting that the online prices are just a little more expensive than what Yamaha got me and a lot less than what the brochure lists, its great value, I have the "Luxury business city view room (double)" (I think), which is listed at 308 rmb online and is amazing value for what you get

Nice day today.
Got up showered and headed out to meet Yamaha for lunch. She had a friend with her that is going to Boston on an exchange programme to work for a year and they wanted to know about living in the west.
Went to an awesome Japanese restaurant replete with simulated thunderous waterfalls, nothing in Guangzhou is done on a small scale, ever. Amongst the dishes we ate were dumplings in some kind of creamy red sauce and were unbelievable tasting!!
It was pleasant, the girl had worked as a translater before and obviously has good English like Sunny has so it was interesting for both of us. I advised her not to tell fat Americans that they are fat..they will likely get upset haha (In China its stated as a matter of fact and not insult). I advised her to go see a baseball game and a American football game if she wanted to get the full cultural experience. And develop a taste for what Americans call beer!

After that we headed back to Yamaha's office where she pretended to work for as few hours, it was pleasant enough but to be honest its a regular office and felt like my own workplace which is the last place I want to be on vacation at.
It was then time to me to head back to my hotel room and freshen up and then headed out to meet Sunny when her work ended.
She works beside Panyu Square which is a huge square not unlike Tianamen Square in Beijing.
Motorbikes are banned in GZ city but Panyu used to be a separate city until it was engulfed into the GZ metropolis but it still has its own laws and motorbikes are permitted there. At every Metro exit there's loads of motorbike drivers trying to get you to take a motorbike taxi ride, minus unnecessary stuff like a helmet!! The locals do use them, women and babies, husband wife and kid with driver all unhemleted on a 250cc bike...its quite a sight.
Of course I get gretty by a chorus of  "hello" and bikers patting their seat and nodding at me....no way am i gonna do that..unless its my last day on earth or something.
Sunny met me looking lovel as usual in a sweet black dress and white frilly top and cute girly shoes with little heels on them.
Arm in arm we went to a local restaurant and ate seaweed, some kind of lettuce in sauce that tasted a bit like meat and a hot spicy beef dish washed down with Snow beer (me) and tea (her). Nice meal, cheap at a grand total of 67RMB between the two of us.

There a water fountain display every night in Panyu Square between 20:00 and 20:30, classical music and Chinese traditional music is played out of the public PA system and the the water fountains spout in synch, its utterly fantastic and really impressive.
Everything in that side of the square stopped while this was on ,and kids ran around excitedly in and out of the massive spray blown by a slight wind downstream. Couples hugged, old folk sat on benches and watched in silence and the cool kids on roller-skates pretended not to notice.
After that it started to drizzle a little so I haled and umbrella while Sunny and I strolled around the square embraced close, with classical music still playing and the old folk now doing their Tai Chi thing, really romantic I thought.
At the end of the square is a kind of viewing area with walls to lean against and its clearly a lovers point, many couples sat on the benches hugging and nuzzling.... We hugged for a bit and then shared our first proper kissing and the time just melted away as we discussed the things you do in this kind of situation. Sunny said to me at one point is this a dream?, and where have I been until now (in her life)? which I thought was really sweet.
So the time came for the last Metro back to the hotel and she didn't mind me kissing her goodbye in public one bit and she went off smiling happily as did I.

Am I dreaming or is this really happening to me at at last?

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, describes today...

Started the day by chatting to Sunny on qq in work. One of her colleagues were leaving so the office were going to meet up and have a going away dinner party, Sunny wanted to go and of course I'm fine with that , I know that work social functions are more important than at home, she would like to spend lunch with me though.

So I met her at the Panyu square station at 11:40 and she had until 1:30 free (she left as early as possible) . We had a nice lunch and sat in trhe shade in Panyu square watching the activity, its was crazy hot and actually sunny with blue skies today so staying in the shade was the order of the day. When we walked to the restaurant earlier Sunny help up and umbrella to shade us, i offered to hold it but she said I dont know the right way to place it....I didnt debate the point, it seems I'm the rain umbrella carrier but not the sun one :)

Sunny said she wanted to stay with me as long as posible and decided that she would ring her boss and ask could she have the afternoon off. This is a big deal to me as she told me beforer that any leave she takes apart from public holidays is not paid for so I really appreciated the gesture.
The boss said ok, Sunny will be busy tomorrow catching up with her work...
We sat in Panyu square takling romantic stuff, it was all very relaxing and pleasant.

So ended the best of times....

I wanted to buy Yamaha some Olay stuff that these ladies seem to love so much so asked Sunny to help me pick some out for her. We went into the Panyu town centre and bough some cosmetic stuff I got Sunny a couple of bottles too which she was real delighted with ( i had to force her to take them and even then it had to be the cheapest stuff). After thaT we went for some drinks - I had coffee and she had a fruit drink, we held hands across the table and just enjoyed the sensory input.
It was now coming up to 18:00 when she would have to go back to meet her colleagues after work, we had a hard time getting a bus or taxi and eventually got a taxi back to the train station..when i realised my wallet was missing from my bag....ohh fuuuuuuudge (that is not the word i used..)
One of the street we walked down to getr the taxii had not street lighting and was pretty busy so it must happened there. Ling used to make me give my wallet to her for safekeeping in her purse and I just never got into the habit with sunny..lesson painfully learned. We got a taxi back to the café where we had drinks before the taxi to the station in case it had somehow droped out of my bag..but of course not. Ihad a moments lapse and placed it into the front pocket of my bag not the back one...and would be easy for a pickpocket to rob me if my atten was distracted ..which it obviously was. I only had a bout 200 rmb left in there but it also had my emergency 300 euro fund in there..i forgot to hide the money in my hotel room and now paid dearly for that..it would have been enough to get me to the end of my trip just fine and i'd only be down 200 rmb and a nice wallet...
I know what Sunny earns so i'm totally freaked out..how am i gonna last to next weekend on a couple of hundred which i assumed is all Sunny could afford. She kept saying to me don;t worry she will look after me, all i kept thinking was about how fudging helpless I felt. The only positive was that the hotel was paid already for cash upfront and the deposit money could be used to pay Sunny back the money she lent me.

We went back to the hotel and i looked up my credit card company emergency number..the "international toll free number" apparently isnt toll free in China..my phone credit ran out while they were taking down my address here ...second time I rang them with Sunny's phone and the same thing happend, the second lady i was talking to kept putting me on hold and obviously was out of her depth.
Sunny went down to the FamilyMart store outside and bought some credit for her phone and I rang for a third time..this time got through to someone more clued in who took Sunny's name and work address and mobile number and said they would arrange and express courier delivery of a new card to her, but it would take 3-5 working days, i'll be impressed if it does, so may arrive by Friday if i'm lucky and if not monday or tuesday next week. So mightly relieved.
Sunny then surprised me and handed me 2900 RMB and said its a loan. I'm thinking WTF??!! Then she apologises and says she can only take out 3k any one time and she used 100 topping up her phone sim!!
She's been saving like an eager beaver and has a truely surprising cash pile which she says is mine to use as she knows I'll pay her back.

I really like this girl.

She calls her work colleagues and apologies for not being with them but her boyfriend needs her. She said not to worry, its a good reason and people would expect her to take care of me in such circumstances.

We goofed about on the sofa and watched Chinese tv, Sunny complained that i was to stubbly so I asked her had she ever shaven a man, she said no so I let her shave me, she really enjoyed doing it and wanted to do my head too but I respectfully declined! Its quite a sensual thing having a woman shave you and examine you so close up, I quite enjoyed the sensation as clearly did she.

Eventually it was time for her to head back to the train station to get the last train back home so I walked her there and we said our romantic goodbyes.

I have found a keeper.

Ronan,

Certainly sounds like you've found yourself a keeper this time .....and no fags either!!  haha!!
Best of luck to you. The luck of the Irish, must have finally kicked in!! lol!!!

Well you have learned an expensive lesson, one you won't forget in a hurry. Now you know that Sunny is a keeper, give your wallet to her in future, i can almost guarantee that it''ll never be stolen in her care!!

I have to be doubly careful when i go back to China visiting, as i'm coming from a country where crime is almost non-existent to a country rife with pickpockets and the like. Not an easy transition to make!!

One thing I never put in my wallet.... Money. My ID's, credit card and some other info but never money. Cash goes in the front pants pocket. If someone's reaching in there to get it... you know it. :icon_biggrin:

Oh and a NY thing. Big bills inside small bills out. If someone is watching you pull the money out they only see small bills.

I got pretty lax my last trip and heard about it pretty quick from my wife. So when your mind is on "other" things it is easy to relax your diligence.   Sorry it happened, but, you know what they say, everything happens for a reason.  Now you know how good a person she is and how she really feels about you.  So maybe a blessing in disguise.

I'm a firm believer in the silver lining theory.
It showed me just how far she willl go for me, how she is genuine about me. I must admit for the first time in a long time I have the unmistakeable beginnings of real love rather than just fondness in my heart.

So no major calamities today thankfully.
I got up, chatted to Sunny on qq for a while , had my custom nukked breakfast meal then headed out. Leaving a load of washing drying in the washer/dryer machine to finish off.

I bought some coffee and a " Guangzhou" mug in Starbucks and a coffee press. I am now set to have my Grande Americano fix home brewed when ever i like :)

I bought some other stuff..ok i bought various varieties of beer to check out later for research purposes.

Leaving the supermarket there was a bad ass thunderstorm passing overhead with the heaviest rain i ever saw. Talk about flash flooding, within 5 minutes of rain the roads were a complete river and there was several accidents due to aquaplaning i assume.
Thankfully it was over as soon as it started and the journey back to the hotel was doubled as i had to navigate a windy route through the flooded streets and pavements.
In Malaysia they have storm drains for just this eventuality but not in GZ for some strange reason. The floods did clear fairly fast but in a city that gets regular downbursts like this I'm certain why don't they have a better drainage system in place?

When i got back to my hotel room it was back to being really hot and humid and sticky outside and the hotel room was even wsorse as the drier just steams up the room but it gets the job done.

I snoozed on the sofa watching Chinese TV which is ...different and woke up with a start at 17:10..I was supposed to meet Sunny at 18:00 across town so had to leave NOW..no shower or freshen up time.

I met her on time and she was with Yamaha who was in the vicinity on business so popped in to chat with her. As soon as Sunny saw me she rested her arm on my shoulder and leaned into me - so clearly we were now officially publically a couple ! She told me later she showed her work colleagues my picture also, they say I look younger than my age apparently..ah yes, she know which buttons to press !

We went for a great dinner in a local restaurant and the price came to a princely 40 RMB when she was ordering the food she had a discussion for about 5 minutes over the price of my beer. She felt the price of 8 RMB was too much and it should be 6 RMB..... We got it for 6 RMB.

We then went for our now customary stroll around Panyu Square and then sat on the seats and goofed about.

She rang Martins Zhifang to arrange our meet up tomorrow night. Zhifang said she was very busy, and when Sunny asked when would be a better time to call she hung up hahahahahhaah!!!!
I knew Martin was landing today so strongly suspected she was occupied with her man.
Sure enough Zhifang rang back later and explained we rang just as Martin arrived :) I spoke to the big man himself and then passed the phone back to the boss to arrange the important details.

We are hooking up tomorrow night so really looking forward to that, will be great to meet up with Martin finally.

That was pretty much my day, no major dramas, just a lovely relaxing feel good time.

The closest thing to a real helmet in Changsha was a man on his bike with a helmet for a constructor worker, you know the yellow one .. I don't know what thing will fall on his head while driving but I suppose it would be good for something..
Irish.. I am really pleased to read about your adventures in China.. It is like a ship that finally get to the shore so to say... I am very happy for you..
I looked at the photos in Martins blog and you seem to had a nice time together.. Sorry about your wallet but this is things that happens. It gave you some nice answers too so there must have been some purpose with this happening to you this time..

Keep up the good work

Thanks Arnold, not!!

What a beautiful day today in Guangzhou after the all day deluge yesterday. Its clear blue skies with perfect visibility, the air has been washed clean for a day or two. Its cool at around 18C, a perfect Irish summers day, though the locals are wrapped up like its Siberian cold outside haha!!

Sunny cant wait to see me, she texted me that its only 4.5 hours until we meet and that she has an important question for me....maybe I should hide the booze in the fridge haha
She normally works a half day on Saturdays but is taking  unpaid leave tomorrow to be with me, the second time she's done this.

So just the beginning of a great weekend i think.
I have the sniffles today and a sore throat, i think i must have caught a cold in the rain yesterday, its nothing major though and i got some tablets in Watsons earlier so hopefully doesnt get much worse, i really hope I don't pass it on to Sunny and have the pair of us with runny noses, could make snuggles messy!

What time did you post your last message Irishman?

Cos we are all waiting for the 4.5 hours to pass to find out what that important question was!!

And I bet it is not to ask if you want Vick rubbed into your chest to ease the sniffles.

Irishman, Where are you? I miss reading your updates. It sure has been a long 4.5 hours.
Must have been a heck of a question!  Hope everything is still turning up "Sunny" for you.

Had a nice day today.
My cold is finnaly gone. I did some gift shopping in the morning and hooked up with Ted outside the bookstore opposite the TeeMall and we went to an Italian restaurant for lunch. It was nice having some western food after weeks of Chinese food it has to be said, the apple pie dessert was very tasty!

I wanted to do some more gift shopping so Ted called his wife for advice as to where would be a good spot as the TeeMall is extremely expensive. His wife suggested Beijing Lu and we were trying to figure out how to get there reading a map I had when a kid came up to us and offered to help which was very kind. He told us which stop to go to on the Metro (Gongyuanqian) and we found it no problems (take exit C at the Gongyuanqian stop and walk about 150 metres straight ahead) and your there.

We went into a traditional clothes shop when we were very pleasantly assaulted by several really pretty ladies that could probably sell oil to the Arabs and snow to the Eskimos. A real fun experience and both Ted and I got gifts for our ladies having barely escaped buying the whole shop up (I might be slightly exaggerating a little here) western shop assistants have a lot to learn abut service form the likes of the Chinese ladies. I hate clothes shopping but these women made it fun for all and they got the sale as a result.

Ted and I strolled around a bit more and I got a pair of gloves for Sunny as she hasn't gotten any and its so damn cold here recently her hands are always ice cold (she loved them). We also checked out a Tibetan store which again had funny attractive shop assistants trying to sell half of Tibet to us, thankfully for me my wallet was near empty so we walked away unscathed this time!

Ted and I headed back to Tiyu Xilu and had some coffee in Victory Plaza Starbucks and relaxed and then parted our ways. Ted , if you are reading this, it was a pleasure meeting you and I look forward to seeing you again if not this visit, definitely on the next one.

When i got back to my hotel i freshened up and headed back out to meet Sunny. As usual the metro during rush hour is nuts, you literally have to shoulder charge your way in to the train and be prepared to be squeezed like a sardines in a tin, I'm used to it by now but when that train pulls into the station i still get that oh crap here we go again felling.

I met Sunny and Yamaha at the Panyue station and Yamaha wanted to bring us to a nice restaurant and we walked in the freezing windy cold for about half an hour, if i'd have known how far and how cold and miserable i'd be by the time we got there i'd have insisted on a taxi. So utterly chilled to the bone we got to the restaurant. It seemed to be mainly a hot pot restaurant. My heart sank, hot pot is a novelty the first time, the second you realise its just you dunking bits of raw food into spicy oil and it just is like cooking at home except it really doesnt taste like much in my opinion. I just walked half an hour , froze my ass off, i was damned if i was going to have to cook a tasteless meal for myself. Sunny saw the look on my face and said did i like hotpot, i just said no and do they have a menu. They did and we had a wonderful meal. I had donkey for the first time (tastes a bit like ham but has a different texture) that you dip into a really spicy black garlic sauce, really good. There was four other courses , beer and rice and it all came to 133 RMB. A great meal and the girls seemed happy to. Sunny and Yamaha chatted for a long time at the end of the meal, Sunny with her hand on my knee kept looking over at me with smiles and it seemed that i was the topic of conversation and it was all good.

After that, we got a taxi and dropped Yamaha home (she lives in the same area as Sunny) and then Sunny brought me to her apartment to meet her colleagues from work that were home and were all curious to meet me. They all had checked out my profile of course on chnlove (two of them are on chnlove) and apparently I'm much better looking than my photo suggests..yeah right..but flattery is always welcome!!That was good fun and apparently tomorrow night they are going to hold a dinner party for me, Sunny apparently really is a good cook and she is going to do the cooking. The way Chinese dinner parties go down is that the ladies first of all decamp to the food market (they dont have a fridge so everything is bought fresh) then depending what ingredients are best value and freshest on the day decides what is cooked, actually i'm looking forward to watching them buy fresh food and then haggling with the seller, i bet they make sure its top quality at the absolute lowest price they can get. It promises to be a fun evening. Sunny gave me a gift of a flower thing that goes on a car dashboard that apparently moves in the sun or something :)

I have a gift for each remaining day for her to keep things ticking over nicely so looking forward to my last few days here before the inevitable tears on Sunday morning.

Thanks Shaun, I guess i've learned some had lessons from the mistakes i've made in the past and so far am right on target. It's no lie to say that I'm falling for her.
Honestly, the only thing i think at this stage that will stop me marrying her is her parents, but theres no point in me worrying about that, its out of my control, I'm just going to make her as happy as can be and hopefully that will be enough for her mother (the matriarch) to decide that I can take care of their daughter.

I have a few precious days left with her, and I'm gonna enjoy every last minute i have with her.
When I get the Metro back to my hotel she holds my hand over the barrier until the escalator pulls us apart and she then watches me until i go out of sight..did i mention how much I like this girl already?l :) She doesnt care abut the stares the other folk in the station give us. Its always with smiles though, the Chinese are very personable people, I think they like a good romance scene more than most so I usually get big grins from men and women alike on the escalator as this goes on :)

Since you have a few days left before leaving, think carefully on what your future lies with Sunny when your alone. If you plan to ask Sunny to marry you take this opportunity to meet her parents if you can.

Whatever you decide its best to it in person before leaving so you know what to plan for on your next trip to China.

Strange, how so many of you put so much importance on parents consent!! I can understand if we are talking about an unmarried lady, but not way, ....so much with a previously married lady.
These parents are more than aware that their divorced daughters have little or no chance of finding a Chinese husband. If you come accross as a decent and sincere man, they would i'm sure be more than happy to know that there daughter has found happiness in her life again.....

I have also known of so many Chinese ladies, that defied there parents disapproval of a husband the first time round. So if the lady has a true love for her man, she isn't going to let anything come between them.....

So don't worry so much guy's, there is very little chance of a parents disapproval arising, or coming between you....

I have thought about this a lot and have discussed with Sunny. She and want to get married to me. She is from a rural background, a village where no laowai has set foot apparently. Her parents are currently working in Guangzhou though. In China you must get married in the region you come from so this will be a consideration to the parents. She is going to introduce me to her parents on my next visit. She wants tell them about me and convince her mother that i am the right man for her. She thinks its better that they get used to the idea first, she is certain her mother will be angry at her initially but she says her mother loves her and hopefully will hopefully eventually come round to the idea.

David, Sunny is 25, she's not divorced and therefore far from washed up even in Chinese terms, she is from a traditional background and even though I Knowles she loves me, if her mother says no I'm pretty sure that will be game over. However I'm not dwelling on the point its out of my control, all i can do is continue to make Sunny happy and if its meant to be it will be.

Ronan,
it was nice meeting up with you and yes we should get together again. and if possible we could get
together with our ladies for a dinner. does Sunny like pizza? maybe we could go and have pizza as Sisi
really likes a good pizza and it will be a good chance for us to have our 2 beer limit that our ladies dont mind us having.
as far as the mom i think everything will be alright as Sunny seems to know the best way to approach
her mom and come febuary when you come back it will be time to marry. damm does that mean i will
have to buy a red envelope?? i dont think a six pack of beer will fit into the envelope ? hahahaha
also maybe Willy and Yuyan could join us all also. we can catch Willy when he is out of viagra as
that is the only time he leaves the house. hahahah Willy just joking

Ronan,

Get the mothers birthday date now.  Send her a birthday card along with flowers and chocolates.  You might try to send chocolates every other week or something like that.  Start buttering her up now.  You can't left Sunny get away. I don't think the men here can go through another one with you. :icon_cheesygrin:  Just kidding but she really looks like a keeper. Every picture of you since you met her you look like you are 6 ft tall even with the picture with Martin.  I'd say if she asks you then you need to say yes. If you don't all of us here will. :icon_cheesygrin: But again, she is a keeper!!!!!

Ronan,

I had no idea, that Sunny was a single lady or that she was only 25 years old, i must have missed something along the line somewhere... haha!! As you can see from my previous post, i was concentrating the main comments to divorced ladies that would probably also have children.

So Yes, i would go along with Sunny's plan, after all, ...nobody is going to know mum better than she!! lol!! But what i said about knowing so many Chinese ladies that had defied the parents non-approval is very real. This just goes to show that when a Chinese girl/woman wants you and only you, then she tends to get him, with or without the parents blessing......

David , would I want to do that to a Girl's Parent's ? I don't think so . I wouldn't do that to myself . I would never think of breaking up a Family this way , our relationship would never advance to that point ... if I was caught in that situation .
Title: RE: My trip to Guangzhou - reloaded

Arnold,

Who said anything about breaking a family up?? All the women i know that defied there parents in her choice of husband remained very much apart of her family!! So many here think that if the parents don't agree with the daughters choice of husband, ...that's it she loses her family!!  That's not how it works at all.... I agree that some may disown them, but it's very rare to go as far as that. Obviously everyone, especially the daughter wants her parents blessing, and for everyone to be happy about her choice of husband .....but it's not the killer that most here seem to think it is.

As I've said before i know of so many ladies in China that have married without the parents initial blessing. Most parents where this has happened have come round to their daughters view after the husband has shown/proved to them, that he is a good husband for their daughter. .... Most of those ladies i personally know of, are still married and are still happy... At least two of my secretaries on different projects, and in different provinces in China, had married their husbands without their parents blessing......

Ask those Chinese ladies that are now here on the Forum, if what i'm saying is right or wrong?? I'm pretty sure that you'll find that if a girl/lady/woman loves a man enough and wants him enough, she will not let anything get in the way of being with him.....

Post by: Irishman on November 18, 2009, 12:03:47 pm
Pull up a chair, this is a long one!

Today I woke up late and of course Sunny had sent me a couple of messages in qq offline calling me her lazy boy and to wrap up with extra clothes as its colder in Guangzhou than in Dublin right now!!!

She has a personal qq website with a photo section, she added a new section today which she labelled "My happiness" with pictures of us, she wanted me to send her all the pictures i had taken of her and me to put on there to. So sweet.

I wanted to get some more presents for family and of course Sunny and I remembered a pedestrian street from the last time in Guangzhou that had loads of small shops but off the tourist trail and couldnt remember the name. So I asked Sunny if she knew it, she rang Yamaha who rang me and suggested she and a colleague from work bring me there this afternoon. These women are incredible, i would have been perfectly happy to go there my self once i got directions but no, they wanted to give me the guided tour..
So it would be impolite to refuse so I agreed to met Yamaha and a work colleague that spoke really good English (he went to University for three years in America) and Changshou Lu Station (thats the name of the shopping street too). They arrived fifteen minutes early and i arrive 10 minutes late (sunny and I were chatting on qq and i lost track of time!!) They called me a couple of times on route for updates but they waited patiently and I arrived and apologised profusely. I had texted Sunny while on the train to let her know i was running late to meet Yamaha and did she think she wuld be annoyed, Sunny said dont worry about it, have a nice afternoon. She of course than rang Yamaha and apologised for delaying me to her so Yamaha was all smiles when I arrived and started apologising, saying that Sunny had already called her and it was fine :)

I got a cashmere scarf for Sunny for 59 RMB (no idea what the starting price was, that what the finishing price was though, it was very nice with a very smooth quality feel to it, Sunny of course loved it when I gave it to her later).
We walked about and went into a Buddhist temple and Yamaha encouraged me to take pictures quickly as photography wasnt really allowed there, it was an incredible place with golden statues everywhere and people praying and burning incense. I noticed that Yamaha made a point of making a money donation to one of the Buddha's to pay her respect, her colleague joked to me that she was praying for 10 babies!!
After that Yamaha asked me if I wanted to get something for Sunny's birthday next month. I did of course and had mentioned it to Yamaha before. Now here where the afternoon turned really interesting...
The area near this shopping street has a wholesale Jade market..ie its whole sale to jewellers etc. of course Yamaha being Yamaha got us into a building which sold basically Jade jewellery to Jewellers.
Her colleague apparently knew a lot about the business and could tell good quality from poor, and Yamaha has never ever let me down so if she says its so its so. Ordinarily "modern"  Chinese ladies consider jade to be for the old people, but Sunny is a "traditional" girl (Yamaha's description) from a rural background and Yamaha says she would love a jade gift. She is right, I mentioned jade to Sunny the other day and was surprised to hear her say its really nice.
Eventually we ended up at one sellers stall, they had a really beautiful pendant there. A little green Buddha, surrounded by a  white gold surround and with a couple of tiny diamonds , Yamaha's friend assured me this was top quality and it would increase in value in the future and the price here is far below what would be in any jewellers on the high street, more on that later.
Yamaha asked to try it on so I could see what it looked like, she put it on a silver necklace and it looked really nice. After much haggling they got the price down to 2740RMB with the silver necklace.
It sounded steep to me but they assured me this was almost cost price and they would prove to me later just how good a bargain this is. I trust Yamaha implicitly and €274 for a fiancée's birthday present is not excessive by any means, though I know Sunny will realise its value and give out to me about spending so much, she will be secretly pleased and her friend jealous which is always a good thing!
Yamaha said she wished her man was there to buy her something like this. I didn't have that amount of cash with me and since my wallet got stolen I leave my credit card in the hotel in case i loose my latest wallet or worse so the same nightmare doesn't reoccur.

On the way out they reassured me that this is a exceptional price. We headed back to Changshou Lu and the first Jewellery store we saw we went into, they were not kidding about value... A smaller piece with just a similar Buddha, almost no metal and no diamonds or necklace...12,250 RMB!!! You could have bowled me over with a feather. They reassured me that the one i was going to buy will come with official documentation to prove that its real Jade, real white gold and real diamonds. They both seemed very pleased with themselves though Yamaha kept saying she wanted one too much to her friends amusement !!

They helped me buy some other touristy stuff to give to my folks..think dragons and Chinese writing and hard haggling and you get the picture!

I then brought them for drinks in a nice cafe which was pricey but good quality and the least i could do for their help. I was going to be late meeting Sunny but it would have been very rude not to show my appreciation to Yamaha and her friend (Sunny agreed when I told her this later and said she knew I would be late after spending an afternoon with Yamaha haha).

Yamaha and I got the metro back to Tiyu Xilu together and her friend went the other direction. I headed back to the hotel and called Sunny to let her know I'd be about an hour late and not to wait for me.

I got back to the hotel and dropped off all the stuff I bought. Yamaha will bring me back tomorrow afternoon to the wholesale place to buy the pendant once i have the cash which is nice of her and she will hold on to it until Sunny's birthday next month and give it to her as a surprise :) I'll buy a birthday card tomorrow and write some romantic mush on there for Yamaha to give to her too.

I got the metro to Panyu Station after freshening up at the hotel. OMG!, if the train was packed at the normal 17:30 time, its packed x10 at 18:45. I got the fifth train I think, not because i was pussy footing around, just that there was massive queues to get on the trains and people literally shoulder charged their way on, then the doors tried to close several times, before they managed it. Its something that has to be be experienced to be believed, i honestly don't know how the heck swine flu isn't raging though the country with people packed so tight together breathing the same air.
Eventually i got to the front of the queue and it was my turn to barge and elbow my way in whilst being firmly pushed from behind to keep going.
When I arrived at the station I tried finding my way to Sunny's apartment but of course in the dark i got totally lost and after walking for about 15 minutes in the wrong direction Sunny rang me and asked where I was. I told here where i had gone and she didnt even know the place, it was quite some distance from her apartment! I decided to retrace my steps and get back to the station, where she would guide me. It turned out her apartment was about 3 minutes from the station in a straight line haha, but it took me about 20 minutes walking as fast i could to get there haha!

She had already bought the food and prepared it for cooking but was waiting for me to arrive to do so. I gave her the scarf i bought her earlier by way of apology and she sid it was fine her colleagues had just arrived home 10 minutes earlier so not to worry.
So i arrived into the apartment to the screams of delight and welcome by several lovely Chinese girls. They were dressed in full winter gear and wearing jackets as the apartment doesn't have heating and its silly cold for Guangzhou outside, even so the windows were open and the door to the balcony wide open..i guess it didnt occur to them to ever close these as its too warm 99% of the time. Sunny bought me into the microscopic kitchen and i helped her as well i could by washing lettuce and passing her dishes as she cooked on a wok and basically worked magic. With one wok she made five delicious dishes and a rice maker machine amde the rice. While she was cooking her colleagues danced to the music and took coy pictures of each other. It was quite a sight, Sunny told me they dance to loose weight and every girl likes to take pictures whats so strange about that!! I think heaven must be a little like this, maybe just a bit warmer!
Once the five separate dishes that Sunny had concocted were done we sat down to dinner and the girls giggled and as several of them are translators (only one didnt speak english) they spoke to me in English. Apparently I'm handsome and not fat. Then later they told Sunny that the more they saw of me the more handsome I got..yeah right!! The dinner was fabbo, as good as any restaurant meal and knowing who cooked it..even better to my mind! I had brought Pringles type crisps with me and we had those and some kind of sweet grapefruit for dessert. The girls of course wanted pictures and i got some ice ones too.
After dinner one of the girls (that doesnt speak English) who is engaged to an English guy showed me an Sunny her wedding photos (the staged ones) they were utterly stunning..i told Sunny we are getting the same guy to do ours!
While While Sunny and I looked a the pictures the other girls couldn't resist checking out my fancy camera which of course led to them taking loads of sweet pictures of themselves and me and sunny looking at the photos. I just loved how fun loving and carefree these girls are. No airs or graces, just girls having good honest fun and it was great.
Eventually it was time for me to head back to the hotel so Sunny walked me to the metro and we parted with kisses and lingering looks and smiles on our faces

Thank you Arnold, its almost perfect in everyway so far. The ridiculous cold isn't really bothering me (that much, honestly, i'm looking forward to getting back to Ireland to warm up - how insane is that!!), my hotel room is now pretty cold, they don't have heating here plain and simple. I tried turning the aircon temp up but it doesn't work, its designed to cool not to warm it seems.

I dont care, its so perfect with me and Sunny I would take this cold 365/247 if it means I could stay here with her.
I cherish every minute, every second with her now, you know how it feels Arnold when the lady is right I'm sure.

Every glance, every squeeze of the hand is a bonus from here on.

Convincing the family is going to be the biggest hurdle as she comes from a rural area so the parents might be very traditional. Since Sunny was never married before the parents will probably want her to find a Chinese man. If Sunny is single child then its going to be her responsibility to take care of her mother when her mother is old even if she is married. It all depends on how the family is open to the idea of marrying a non Chinese man.

I'm not familiar with Ireland immigration but you can say something like this "If you approve of me and Sunny getting married. Once Sunny she settles down in Ireland.  I will try to sponsor you (Sunny's mom) over to Ireland. So We (You and Sunny) can take care of her". That might convince her mom even more but you should only say that if your familiar with Ireland immigration policy that will allow it to happen.

Good Luck with the family meeting.

I dont care, its so perfect with me and Sunny I would take this cold 365/247 if it means I could stay here with her.

This apparently is the coldest November in South China for about 20 years!!!!    China needs to stop all these anti global warming ideas and get us back to proper South China Weather of sunshine and tee Shirts.LOL:icon_cheesygrin:

I joined the crush in the stores buying heaters and warmer bedding.

Thanks fellas, this may well be my last update until I get home.

I got out of bed this morning to see Sunny left me a couple of offline messages saying she wanted to ask me something.
So after a shower and with a fresh cup of Starbucks Espresso (bold) brewing I went online and told her what a greatd ay it was and other romantic mush. She has asked her manager for tomorrow and Saturday off (which will be unpaid leave for her) as she wants to spend as much time as possible with me.... She said she loves me even more today than yesterday

So I'm picking her up this evening after work and then shes coming back to my hotel room to stay with me until my flight back home early on Sunday morning (i can scarcely even bring myself to type about that).

I meet up with Yamaha later to get Sunny's birthday Jade pendant, I also want to get a picture of her and me printed and framed for her to put on the table beside her bed so its gonna be a busy afternoon.

So fellas if you don't hear from me until Sunday evening assume I'm all loved up :):heart::heart:

Arnold, I hope you have a wonderful weekend too, you have waited long enough for this so my heartfelt congratulations.

Well nearing the end of the roller coaster. Emotionally a bit drained, i cried of course at the airport and a couple of times over night, yeah, talk about a pussy.

My flight from Beijing was cancelled with no apparent reason (China Southern Airways ) and the next flight they will put me on is not until tomorrow. So my boss wont be too pleased but what can i do.
They put me up in a this hotel that's by the motorway with literally no shops in walking distance which annoyed me. I was tired hungry and the hotel restaurant doesn't open until 17:30 ..Though the room which smells of smoke is free, the restaurant dinner and breakfast is free too which isnt so bad. Jesus Beijing is really cold with piles of snow everywhere and the air pollution is disgusting, GZ is not a patch on the air here right now.

I decided to hail a cab and the driver agreed to bring me to a supermarket and back to the hotel for 40RMB which seemed fair enough (the hotel front desk said it should be about 15 each way, for 10 extra this guy would wait outside for me which seems like a god deal considering this place appears to be in the smelly armpit of Beijing.
So I got a couple of bottles of wine (the beers were not in the fridge and the room has no fridge (i only realised when i got back that i can open my room windows and put bottles on the ledge outside which is a natural fridge!!) some crisps and biscuit sand am basically pigging out.

I got an extra days vacation , I can chat to sunny on the mobile for another day so its not all bad.

Three months and counting until I get back to Guangzhou.

Ronan,

Good job.  Always trying to turn a bad thing into good. You get and extra day to chat.  Three months is not long. I can't wait to read about your adventure.  While you are there why not catch your waiting friends up here.  We need to hear another good story from you.

Ok I've had some snoozing, some dinner, chatted to my sweetheart so time to fill in the blanks, go grab a coffee, it's probably going to be a rambling post as usual :)

Thursday afternoon I met up with Yamaha and collected the nice jade pendant and bracelet we had chosen yesterday. All that went as plan surprisingly and I had time to go back to the hotel and and freshen up.

I didnt bother bringing my bag or camera as I though I would just be picking Sunny up and bring her back to the hotel
but as usual things didnt quite work out that way!!
Yamaha lives in the same area as Sunny and had invited us over to her apartment for dinner. Sunny told me that Yamaha cannot cook and this means she will cook :D So we went to the vegetable market and damn what a place. i soooo wish I brought my camera, apart from the hundreds of veggie and fruit stalls there were animals where fish swam in tanks, tortoises walked around, snakes slithered and more.. When fresh in China..they really mean fresh, the sights and sounds were quite an assault on my laowai senses but it was overall vibrant with a palpable buzz about the place. I just loved how Sunny examined each and every vegetable and for reasons unknown to me would mutter "bu hao" about one vegetable or and another and reject it with a look of disgust on her face. Its interesting to see how she interacts with stall keepers, she holds herself well and has poise and its clear they treat her with respect, to my eyes they fall over themselves trying to help her, maybe they do that for everyone though. In the west more often its an affront to offer anything approaching customer service like here.

Yamaha's kitchen was tiny and the bowls to wash the vegetables where in the same room as a squatter toilet beside the kitchen..open door.......when in Rome...

Very basic ingredients there but Sunny worked her magic and we had a lovely dinner. I had asked could i help with anything while they prepared the food and they joked i could wash up after to much laughter.
So after the meal much to their surprise I did indeed wash the dishes..Of course there is a "right way" to do this and the hen pecked me into doing it the right way which involved various rinsing operations...i suppose with the heat Guangzhou normally has they have to be really careful about stuff like that..squatter toilets on-suite in the kitchen notwithstanding!

After that the girls chatted abut me mostly from what I gathered and I watched Ms Hong Kong on the TV which wasn't the worst thing a man can do to pass the time :D

Yamaha's parents turned up and Sunny and I made our excuses and left them to visit their daughter after introducing them to me.
Sunny and I then went back to her apartment and she packed some clothes and I chatted to her flatmates. Their friend which I met last week who was going to Boston on some cultural exchange programme had arrived and apparently was full of wondrous tales and they were keen to pump me for information to see if she was telling the truth...how could a modern city have clear skies and no pollution visible?..such a thing didn't seem creditable!
It was nice seeing them again they are lovely ladies. Once Sunny was done packing we headed back to the hotel and had a nice evening snuggling and enjoying being together.
Friday..we just stayed in the hotel room..well she did, I popped out for supplies in the shops below for a few minutes then back to the hotel. That was nice.
Saturday Yamaha called Sunny to say that she had gotten some kind of deal with a photography studio that does the marriage shots and would we be interested ( I had casually mentioned to Yamaha that I wanted to get a nice picture of Sunny and me framed but as it turned out we couldn't find a place to do it at short notice..so of course Yamaha had to fix it by making it even better!) . Sunny was thrilled she always wanted to do this, what girl doesnt want to be done up pretty , try on some fancy clothes and have her picture taken??!! So we went to the studio and the deal (which Yamaha had somehow arranged for a ridiculous price of 8RMB...(not a mistype) was for two outfit changes with Sunny having the full works with make-up eyelashes and hair done. i got to try one one western style suit and one Chinese one. Sunny got a lovely white wedding dress and a tradition Chinese one. Omg!, she looked utterly stunning with her hair and make-up done professionally, I honestly felt like the fat ugly guy beside a professional model.

We had two photo shoots, one with the western gear and one with the Chinese gear and they gave her the pictures on cd afterwards and she will get one large picture framed plus prints of 8 others we choose as out favourites in 15 days.
My netbook doesnt have a cd rom drive so she will qq me them when i get back home. 3 things I have learned from this for our real wedding pics 1) Use teeth whitener or close mouth when smiling 2) Loose weight 3) Get make-up done as well, my skin looks really pink and blotchy beside brown Asian skin tones
I'll post a couple of the pictures when Sunny send to them to me, after wards she wanted to keep her make-up ones she looked so good so we went to a park and took some pics in the rapidly fading light, Sunny kept saying "its not me!!" when she saw her pictures. I think she looks beautiful with or without the make-up and hair done, and told her so and then teased her about this hot supermodel date I had recently :icon_twisted:
She was really happy so of course so was I, girls universally like to look beautiful of course and she certainly was even more beautiful, i felt quite the lucky guy as she fawned over me in the metro, I love the way she keep close attention to me.

We got some dinner in TeeMall and they brought me a knife and fork and for some reason this being my last night this choked me up, the restaurant was a bad choice too as it was mostly a western flavour. I was in China and I wanted to eat with chopsticks and eat proper Chinese food for my last dinner out.. She noticed i was upset and in no time at all I had chopsticks. I definitely think i behave a little irrationally at time like this when I'm barely keeping it together thinking of the flight home.

We went back to the hotel and just basically held each-other close, I lost it a couple of times a little but not in any big way..my nose needed blowing a lot!
Morning came, Sunny helped me pack by really carefully folding all my shirts and even underpants, she wanted to make sure everything was just right for me.
I gave her my yellow backpack i used here to "look after", a t-shirt of mine she liked to wear in bed and she took whatever fruit and juices left in the fridge to bring back to her flatmates :) She also took my coffepress to keep safe for me until my next visit back.

Once checked out we got a taxi to the bus station that drives to the Airport and as we were pretty early once I checked my bags in we spent an hour or so just hugging and kissing in the departure area (domestic flight so she could sit there with me). Then the dreaded moment arrived..the moment  had to go to the boarding area....
She stood in line with me until I handed in my passport and went though the xray scanner machine.Of course I was in pretty bad shape and they people there obviously had seen this before and treated me with kindness and for that I was grateful. Suny stood there watching until I finally had to go out of sight, I eventually got my act together and the flight to Beijing was uneventful.
Once I arrived in Beijing I called Sunny and she told me she had lost it as soon as I went out of sight which choked me a little but I did my best to keep her spirits up.
Then I got a shock..the international departure notice board was not listing my flight..WTF!
I thought I must have gone to the wrong place and eventually  found someone that spoke English and they told me my flight was cancelled. And I had to go to the KLM desk to get another flight. Not good, I'm supposed to be in work tomorrow morning at 7AM..
The KLM desk told me they had subcontracted this flight to China Sourthern  who had then cancelled the flight. I said I don't care who did what, put me on first class or whatever but i need to be back in Dublin today! She told me this is not possible, which frankly i think is a barefaced lie. Anyhow, the upshot of it all is that they wnt fly me out until tomorrow 11:55 which meants I wont be able to go into work and i have no vacation left so my boss will non to impressed but what can I do, I'm in Beijing..there just is no way I can get there ..
So i demanded a hotel room for the night (they didnt offer one) and they eventually said ok. So they bought me to a hotel that close to the airport but is right beside the motorway..there literally is no shops nbear here at all. But the hotel has a restaurant and they said dinner was free as would be breakfast.
I got a taxi to the nearest super market and bought supplies and had a couple of beers and a snooze then had dinner. It was actually really tasty and really Chinese (in other words hard to describe , tasty and nicely spicy) and I got to use chopsticks again so my mood improved immensely.

I called Sunny and had a nice chat with her. She wanted to know exactly what time I need to get up to get my flight home and then declared that she would give me a wake up call herself to make sure I don't miss my flight :):heart::heart::heart::heart::heart::heart::heart::heart::heart::heart:

So I'm having a few nice glasses of Great Wall red wine, with some Pringles style crisps and Chinese biscuits Sunny and I ate before and I had to buy to get one last familiar taste that reminds me of her.

Am counting the days, hours, minutes and seconds until i go back to Guangzhou to meet my love.

Greetings Brothers,

Well Irish I have to say I know exactly how you felt at the airport when it was time to leave Sunny.  Zhen and I were the same way.

My question to the brothers is  do we dare start a poll to see how long it takes this lovestruck Irishman to decide that life without Sunny is no life at all and he follows in the footsteps of those who have felt the same and abandon his life in Ireland to head over to his beloved?

Irish I dont mean to be mean here but by the sounds of it every day is gonna be harder for you than the last.  I wonder if you can wait till your next visit or are you gonna just pick up and go over anyway?

You know what I would do as I already have and right now I dont know whether to hope you have the stomach to wait for your next visit  or hope you have the damn the torpedoes attitude and haul yourself back to Sunny.  I guess we have to let you decide but just remember we are all happy things turned out so well and hope that it lasts the rest of your lives.

Good luck Brother you are surely gonna need it.

Sinccerely,

Zhen and Brian

Finally back home after what seems like a never ending trip back home.
Bit tired and numb right now, sunny sent me a couple of nice message while i wss flying home, suffice it to says she seems to feel the same about me as I do her.
Its a waiting game until February when I can see her again.
I really shouldn't be watching a 12 Girls Band dvd right now, its making me feel terribly lonesome but I still like to cling to a little of china that i can until Sunny is in my arms again.

It was quite a trip for me, dare I hope to dream, have I finally found the one for me?
I did think hard about moving to china but after weighing up the pros and cons its not for me. I will wait like Arnold and others for as long as it takes to hold her here in my arms.

Did i mention how much I want to hold her in my arms already??, I want to feel her warm face pressed against mine, i want  feel the delicate weight of her arm across my chest as she sleeps. I want to lye awake just listening to the her breathing beside me and let it lull me to blissful sleep again.

I sent her a text message to let her know I am back home safe and sound and she replied a few minutes later..even though its around 5AM there when I sent it, i just know she was waiting for me to contact her and let her know I was safe home...

Irish, living there is not for me either. However, I would if I had  to.  It is better than the alternative of not having my wife with me.  it is hard enough being without her even for a limited time.  Congrats on finding your lady.  I hope you get as lucky as i am.

I am a little nervous today.
Sunny told her parents about me earlier and is going to their apartment for dinner tonight and a grilling.
She was quite nervous about it herself and I did my best to reassure it would be fine. But inside I'm wobbly.
I'm going to call her later tonight when she is back at her apartment to see how the evening went, boy i hope it goes ok.
Fingers and toes crossed.

Thanks Robert and Jim.
I couldn't wait until tomorrow to find out so I called her at 11Pm Chinese time as i knew she would be back home by then.
Her mother apparently was dead against the whole thing at first but Sunny says she is very persuasive and that in the end she was coming round to the idea. Sunny says not to worry - they will welcome me by the time I arrive next visit :D , and that she will coach me exactly how to act when I meet them!
Its funny she said her mother asked her the exact same questions she asked me when we were getting close originally. I guess her mother just wants to make sure her daughter is OK and will be taken care of which of course she will be.
So, I'm over the moon and very much relieved!

I was quite concerned as her parents are from a very rural and traditional background but she loves me and she wont take no for an answer. Her mother may be the matriarch but her daughter wont be messed with either :D
Its real, I will marry this woman no matter how long it takes until the day i can carry her across the threshold (try explaining that to your girl for kicks).

Many newbee's are fortunate to have had the help and advice that we offer now here . As Maxx , Myself and a few other's only had the Official Forum for help we were less fortunate in that part of finding ones Lady . I was very Lucky though at one point that my Sister MIN did not let " ME " quit at the time . We all need that kick in the behind ( don't matter from whom it comes ) to keep us going on . That goes of course for many situations in Life .
It would be an honor to meet you also ... some day . Hey nothing is impossible .. as we proofed that to many doing what we do .

You know Irish, I think you are one of the main reasons this site bonded like it did.  For many of us that were here when you had your first trip, saw how supportive the men were here, it gave us a safe haven, if you will, for what we wanted to do. We could be honest about things and not get blasted by some unseen idiot claiming he was Mr. macho.  I know a few tried that but the mods here took care of that crap immediately.  The bonding that came from that experience has carried over into the new guys that come here.  I truly think that was when the "brotherhood" was born.  At least for me it was. And I hope that it will continue even after we are gone.
Anyway, I am so glad that you will have finally found "The One".  It has been tough for you but you had your heart set on what you know you wanted and needed.  And kept at it until you have her. Now nothing should stop you. No matter what it takes.  Congratulations brother.
