OK, for those that do not know, there is an instant messaging program widely used in China. This program is called QQ. For those that remember ICQ, this program is pretty similar. QQ is a big deal in China. You can get an English version of QQ. Here are the details of how to get QQ downloaded, and then how to get your own QQ number (QQ ID).

That's all done ;)

I believe, that hyperlink is to download the 2005 version. The information I see on my screen doesn't look like Chinese or English...It looks like GREEK! I have searched Face Book for QQ all I see is some qq friends lists. I am familiar with Google IM. Does anyone happen to know of an entry level info. site for qq which will actually lead someone through the process?
Thanks

I suppose you could start here
http://www.imqq.com/
There is a download button, as well as a register ID button
for QQ 2009
Mike
I have downloaded the program and have an ID number. That's not the problem. I don't understand how the program works structurally--or how it interfaces with other chat; i.e., google, yahoo etc.
Thanks for your imput,

It does not interface at all with yahoo, ICQ, MSN it works like any other chat software available on the internet. Add friends, chat away.

Dinger is right, it is the biggest chat in China. i use it with the web cam. Nice little program. we can chat and see each other, hear voice etc. All for free. I think the 2009 version is a beta, but it works fine. For older web cams you need to update the software for your cam. For yahoo, you need to update to yahoo IM v9

One thing that I did was to block everyone else except my Lady and friends... Otherwise you will have a lot of requests from people that want to be you friend.. Do it by chose Privacy in Settings and mark No one can add me as a contact... Otherwise you will have a lot of people knocking on your door...
-
I've had QQ even before it was discussed on the old Facebook site. :icon_cheesygrin: If any of you want to exchange QQ ID#'s, PM me.

I downloaded the 2009 english beta version of QQ. I could not find the exact site I downloaded it from, but it works great.
The lady I am talking with wouldn't use anything else, so I had to use it. Not much different from yahoo in my humble opinion.
The video screens are a little different, but really is clearer than when I use yahoo.

haha, nice one Vince.
Yeah Dan, I like QQ a lot too but I find there are a lot of error messages telling me my message wasn't received. Jessie and I use Skype for webcam/mic conversations and usually QQ for text only.
-
i haven't had any error messages as of yet on QQ. Tonight my camera wouldn't work though. Have 2 computers and couldn't get either camera to work. Very frustrating talk I had tonight. More so for her, I could see her, but she couldn't see me. I have skype also (I think I have them all) and it works pretty good. Only talked to one person, though, that used it.
-
Zook...this might be an easy fix. You need to change your settings so that QQ is pointing at your camera/mic. To do this, make sure you are not using your mic/cam, as it won't work if either are being used, or trying to be used.
Beside the mic button is a pulldown arrow. And also beside the camera button is a pulldown. Either one should work. Use the pull down menu, and click on Video Settings...or Audio Settings...depending on which one you clicked. Go through this, and make sure the right things are clicked..meaning, that it is all pointing to your web cam, and your mic. In my case, my camera and mic are part of the same unit.
Once you are done this, try connecting again. Failing this, check your firewall settings.

When I try to get an ID , it's always busy and say to "try again" . I've tried many, many times. How did you get yours please? Thanks.

I love qq. I have met alot of cool people. Mostly women though. But they are fun to talk to. I have made friends from all over. I have now got a tour guide in about 16 cities.

Ok, Here goes. I have had a problem with QQ. At my office I have windstream as an isp. On my laptop I can hear and see her. I go home and cannot hear her. I tried different computers, different settings. Every time it would work on the test then the minute I connect to her bam it is gone. Gone direct and gone through a router, different Operating systems. All programs up to date. The strangest part is sometimes it would work then it wouldn't. It worked initially for about 3 months. I talked to her in the AM, that afternoon I tried again, not having touched the computer in between, then it didnt work. Dinger has tried to help me. We thought we had it working then nope. It has been driving me crazy. Finally I went to my ISP, optilink. Sent a message to their help desk. They said i need a static IP. They would give me one for free. They said to pop that in my router and it would definitely work. I haven tried it yet as she is in Wuhan getting things organized for our wedding. I will let you know though so anyone else having that problem would know what to do instead of racking their brain for about a month.
I have also tried to get my daughter set up and the registration said the same thing, system busy try again later.

Jim,
Just a thought but I've seen the sound check box uncheck itself while on a call with my wife. I recheck it and sometimes it'l uncheck again after a minute or two. I think it has to do with how little noise is on my end but that's only a guess. I just keep rechecking the button and the sound comes back at full and slowly fades. Hasnt happend lately but that's what's happened to me before.

Got a static IP from Optilink. Fixed the problem right up. Talked to their tech. he said it was a problem with a switch. Dynamic IP's go through a different set of switches and routers than static IP's do. So they have a problem with one of their switches. So the easy fix was the static IP. Which is fine with me as I do not have to pay extra for it and it will save me some money as I can host my own web site.
Vince as I thought the firewall would be a continuous problem not an intermittent one. That is why the switch. When it worked it would bypass that switch. Alll of their dynamic IP's go through the same firewall. Static also goes through a different set of firewalls. I didnt ask them why, dont really care.

I downloaded this QQ thing last night, be interesting to see if it works in Aus, she asked if I have MSN which I do but figured this may be easier for her......see what happens & if she calls me today as I emailed my ID & user name. I guess that's one good thing about being in the same time zone....no late night or early morning contact:icon_biggrin:
-
This is a a hard to DL file! The original site posted isn't there and the official site takes forever.
-
I have no problem with it whatsoever, only annoying thing is the knocking when someone signs in that you've had contact with, I thought they were actually trying to call me till I figured it out...........Some nice single ladies on there too, met about 10 in the week I've been on there.:icon_biggrin:
-
Finally I got it!
How do I search for pertinent Chinese groups? I know how to search but what do I use as a search criteria?
-
I have just got an iphone and installed QQ mobile on it, along with some translation applications.
The good news is that with the latest version of the iphone operating system, 3.0, you can cut and paste in those applications that have been updated, so I can copy from the translation app. and paste into a QQ message. The bad news is I can't copy from the QQ messages I receive, I guess because QQ mobile hasn't been updated (yet), so I have to try and work out what the characters mean. Slow isn't the word.
But at least I will be able to send and receive messages in places where I have no internet.
If anyone has had more success than me with copying and pasting received messages, I would be very grateful
Alex

Where do you find other contacts on QQ.I have looked all over and cannot seem to pull up any other people. Is there some sort of search or
browse that I am not seeing?
Don
-
hello zook ;)
are you from Antilles to have this nickname?
About QQ, in fact, the button at the bottom will help you to search.
Or just do a right click on the list with the contacts you have, on the top of the list, and you have "add a contact" ;)
*beats mpo*
Hmm... hello guy, are you free for some chat? i am male, 34, looking for some chinese things to do...
are you available?
lol

Well..Duh!! Thanks Sylvain! Easy enough, I guess I just never went into the advance search before.

How do you find groups to link to in QQ?
-
Do you want to create some groups in fact?
If so : I just don't know. because there are some groups that are already created when you launch QQ.
And you see them in your QQ, this is the main window, with your friends ;)
-
I've never tried to contact or search for anyone, they contact me, only had one guy contact me so far & banned him immediately.:icon_biggrin:
I've been using Google translate & you can cut & paste in that, pretty quick once you get used to it.
-
Scott , since nobody answered yet to your question . Can I suggest you write PM's to Irish / Vince for some help with that . Martin also uses it , they will certainly look into helping you with that problem .
-
BTW, does anyone know where I could get any mobile version of QQ, english one, if possible?
-
I have a little story about QQ while I was in China. As Soon as I turned on my laptop at the hotel Xu Le wanted to get on it. My QQ starts with the computer. Man when she saw that penguin she flipped out. She was excited I knew about QQ and added me prmptly to her list. The other thing I found out is that she is a jealous girl. I joined an english speaking group right after I signed up for QQ. So I have made many friends. Most of them female. They all know of Xu Le. I also told Xu Le I had friends I speak english with that lived in china. There were to girls that know I was going to be in Beijing and Baoding. One works at a tea house in Beijing, the other is a real eatate agent in Baoding. They both wanted to meet me while I was in town. When I asked Xu Le. She asked me If I wanted to date other girls. Of caourse I said no they were friends. This did not fly with her. haha. needless to say i didnt meet my friends.
-
Josh Just a warning Chinese girls do not play well with other Chinese girls. When there is a man involved and girl number one doesn't know girl number 2.
-
Oh yeah I figured it out really fast. She did not like the girls on QQ. So I stopped talking to them.
-
BTW, does anyone know where I could get any mobile version of QQ, english one, if possible?
The only English mobile version is for the Apple iPhone I believe, and you can just get that in the iTunes App Store in iTunes.
All other English versions of QQ can be found at http://IMQQ.com
-
Well...
I found any website related to QQ for mobiles and in english... but it is just wrong enough, all is chinese when launching and using the software...
what a pity that it is in english on Iphones.... :-(
thx anyway for your help, Nik ;)
