Hi my brothers !
Most of you come from the western countries and you must know your culture very well . Would you like to recommond some books about Western
culture ? As you know , I have an international culture center and I would love to intoruce more western culture to the Chinese people here . I want to
translate some great books with other co-workers in order to promote the exchanges between China and other countries .
Anybody has some great ideas about the books of western culture ? If you know some publisher there who have some simliar plan , please let me know .
Let us together do our best to promote the cultures of the world .
Thanks for all your time and welcome any ideas !

Here's some:
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists: By Robert Tressell
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West. By Dee Brown
The Outsider:By Albert Camus
From Dawn to Decadence: 1500 to the Present, 500 Years of Western Cultural Life: By Jacques Barzun
The Razor's Edge. By W. Somerset Maugham
The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck
Candide : By Voltaire
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: By Hunter S. Thompson
I've left out the likes of Shakespeare, Hardy and the like. If you want a list of the "classics" let me know and I'll put one together for you. Best of luck with your project, it's a fine idea.

you can do a search for american culture, history on the site and it will pull up some titles ::)
-
Anything written by John Steinbeck.
Thiere used to be a set of books published.By time life books. It was called the history of the Americas. It covers everything that ever happened in America.
If you can find any books by P.G. Nagle. They are well written books.Covering the American civil war. In New Mexico and Texas. If you can Find History Channels Web site. You can order any number of Cd's that cover American history.
For something more contemporary.I would go with rolling stone magazine. And time magazine.

He wants western culture...not just American culture. I know it might come as a surprise to some, but there are other countries with their own cultures that make up western culture.

Boy Martin somebody is whinny today.Do you want to borrow.Conner's teething ring.He has only slobbered on it a little today.Chinese Knot for the Canadian culture.Try Bob and Doug Mckenzie. They paint a true picture of Canadian culture and customs
-
Bob and Doug is good. Or anything by Rick Mercer.
-
No wonder all the good comedians come from Canada... the americans can't take a joke... :o

now thats what i like about the forum more informative than the Bob and Ted show.

I hear Yogurt has good culture. Why read about it when one can enjoy the taste and health benifits it has.
-
A History of Warfare by John Keegan ...... why? Because One key concept put forward by him is that war is inherently cultural. So by studying the difference on how, for example, the Greeks waged war compared to the Japanese, One can see how we approach most things in life, wether being politics, war, business or Love.

Heard this in a movie today ....
"... Oh I'm from Canada, you ever been?"
"No, but I like the food."
HUH ??? ??
I get asked that a lot. Describe Canadian food. Hmm, hamburgers and steaks? Poutine, but that's french Canadian.

Which movie did that come from? Although I've heard similar lines before... usually from people who are trying not to hurt someone's feelings... or they really like the poutine...

Canadian Food?..... Back Bacon, Maple Syrup, and would you believe it....Ginger Fried Beef! Ginger Fried Beef is from Beef country Alberta. And an other Canadian invention? " This cocktail was invented by bartender Walter Chell at the Owl's Nest Bar in the Calgary Inn in Calgary, Alberta in 1969"
-
Any of Bill Bryson's travel books are a good read with some cultural aspects from an Englishman living in America and married to an American. He has written about a lot of western countries and has some humor as well.
-
I wonder, Chinese Knot, maybe a good Canadian book that also has a heavy debt to the people from your land that gave up their life's blood and sweat in its creation - The Last Spike " by Pierre Berton
-
cocktails? Then who invented the cocktail napkin?
OK. So, if yogurt has culture does that mean it goes to the opera?
Martin, if a Canadian falls in the forest does he make a sound? Only if Bob and Ted hear about it or only if he hasn't been drinking beer.
Americans aren't the only ones that add to Western culture? Really Martin, you had to go there? But really I thought they were talking about meaningful contributions. :o ;D
Yes now I feel better. Just had to get it out of my system.

Glad you are back Shaun....I missed you and your Dry Martini wit 8)
And for those who do not know the drink I was refering to, well it is the Bloody Caesar.... Render unto Caesar… Hiccup...oops drank too many :o
-
Interestingly enough napkin like serviette are both French in their origin. A tablecloth in French is a nap.
there is a supplier in Guangzhou for some fancy cocktail napkins 16 pieces to a pack and they are 2 cents
per pack.
minimum order is 1 million packs
so for home use that would be a lot of cocktail parties :) :o ???

vermont has the best maple syrup sorry Rhonald

Yet another hijacked thread. Back on topic please. Let's respect the person who posted the original questions and try to stay somewhat on course.
-
What is Western Culture? Is there such a thing? The English Culture has been diminished greatly by the influx of too many immigrants both legal and non legal. Even the European countries are suffering from this other than maybe Spain and Greece.
The USA has never really had a culture since the country was taken from the native inhabitants and it's present roots are from every country in the world.

Thanks Willy. I think I'll hijack this thread in another direction as well.
A coworker was telling me how he thought we should send back all the Tamils that recently landed in Western Canada by boat. According to him, all the immigrants should be sent home because they cost too much to integrate into society. I mentioned to him that he is Italian. We are all immigrants here in some form or other. Canadian culture is very much an amalgamation of all cultures.
My brother married a Nigerian girl. My coworker married a Korean girl. I know an Italian man that married a Philippine girl. My neighbors are Chinese. We had a man living in my building who was half French and Half Belgian and spoke like a Californian surfer dude and was only here to ski and party. There are more Australians in town during the winter than there are Canadians (it seems).
I disagree that immigrants diminish a culture. I think they contribute to it's culture. Well, they definitely change the culture, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Well said Neil,
Culture like every thing else evolves it's an dynamic thing, At the very least Chinese Knot is trying to promote the understanding of different cultures and that must be a worthy goal. So if you have have any good book suggestions...let's be having them, lets help the guy out.................... ;D

Knot,
here is another idea from what i posted. when i go on to Amazon i do a search for whatever i am looking for at the time
and when it pulls up titles i read the listing on it and see how it is rated. when i find something i go to the main bookstore
here in Guangzhou that is like 7 floors. on the 4th floor is the english books and i ask them if they have this title. they look for me
and if not i ask do you carry it and a few times they said they do so i just call or go there periodically to see if it came in.
not sure were your at but it might be an option for you also. but the main idea was for you to do a search and then read the
reviews and see if its a book you might want. that was the purpose of the original post i made. but when i buy the book here it
is a little more but still cheaper than if i ordered it and they mailed it here.
i think i know why your doing this so i will give you a title that the ladies might like to read ; the books title is
A FREE LIFE by Ha Jin and it follows a mother and father and sons journey as they immigrate to the USA
it is a really excellent told tale of the struggles and ultimate success they had when they left China and went
to the USA
Also A GOOD FALL by Ha Jin is also a very good book as it details immigration to a new land. I found both books to be
as they say Exquisite and Resonant
