I plan to travel to Shanghai/Guilin 10/12/2011. The lady I plan to see tells me that Chinese wine is lousy and that American wine is outrageously expensive.
Just curious, in order to have a few bottles for special occasions, can it be shipped from US? Or can you carry in your luggage to China without running afoul of Chinese customs inspections?
-
I tried it in my carryon and they took it away from me. I dont know what they will do with a flamable liquid in your checked baggage.
I dissagree with her opinion of Chinese wine. I have been served a few good wines here. And not very expensive.
-
I have seen a few South American wines there that I recognized here sold in Canada, and the price point was just a little bit more then here.
-
Every time I have been to China I have taken up to 4 bottles of Aussie wine without any problems.
But it cannot be a part of your carry-on luggage...must go into the aircraft hold in your main suitcase.
Spirits...bourbon, scotch etc are flammable and would be dis-allowed. Wine is not counted as a flammable liquid for Air-carriage regulations.
I have to agree that Chinese wine is not to my taste. I would not say it is lousy, because that taste is how the local Chinese like it, and are used to. But good quality Western style wine always goes down very well with them, our tastes are to much more full-bodied wines. Local wines (in my limited experience) are very "thin" and one-dimensional.

Thanks to everyone. I will try the checked baggage route. Maybe I can find some good imported wines there. If not, I will have some back up.
chnlove.info/, what a great place this is.

Wines there are pretty expensive, even the awful Chinese wines, better bringing your own or sticking to the beer!
-
I've taken a couple bottels of Tequila to China.I haven't had any problems.Like everybody is telling you.You can not take it as carry on.It has to go with checked baggage.

How about moonshine. I was thinking of taking some to my future brother in law. Of course Peggy will have a fit but I am sure he'll like it. Shoot half the men in town will be there once he tastes it. ;D
You realize moonshine doesn't have any labels or tax stamps. Just a mason jar with clear liquid that will peel the paint off of a car. 8)
I could label it auto parts cleaner.
Willy, Maybe I just found something better that a carpet cleaning business in China. Hey, Peggy's family has a producing farm. I wonder if you can grow corn in China? Hmmm....
-
took two bottles of north carolina moonshine last trip to china. also two bottles of jack daniels #7. carry on luggage went thru with no problems. buzz
-
Buzz, the question is, how did they like the moonshine? Or did you keep it to yourself? :D
Skip. Sorry for the hijack.
-
Hey Shaun , if Moonshine is made from corn , we need someone to do a taste between this and their white spirit which is also a paint stripper maybe they are very similar as there is plenty of corn in China .
-
Robert, yes there is plenty of corn in China. McDonald's was a testament to that. I bought the granddaughter a happy meal and it came with a hamburger and an ear of corn not fries.
Illegal moonshine is still pretty popular around here.
I wonder if this would be a one way ticket to hell? ...for that matter a Chinese jail?
Hmmmm
