Title: Urumqi
Post by: Hajo on July 06, 2009, 01:56:29 pm
Well, my trip to Urumqi is scheduled for the end of July. On the 31st of July I am supposed to get on an airplane in Billund, Denmark. 24 hours later I should be landing in Urumqi.

But since yesterday I feel a little afraid that my trip could be in jeopardy. Until yesterday I have been chatting with Vicky between 2 and 4 hours daily. But now the Internet connections are closed. But we are lucky that we can use the short message system. It is blacked out some times, but not all the time. She told me not to be worried. I just hope the best!

But Vicky and I are pretty sure that we will overcome these obstacles. I will write a short review on the relationship Vicky and I have, as I think only a few have read my blog. I have not been very active in my blog, because of much work.

Jin Yong (Vicky) and I started to write on April 13th 2009. Our relationship developed pretty fast. Already after a few letters I send my email-address to Jin Yong and told her we might write short letters to each other to learn each other languages. Her first private mail arrived on May 6th. It was in both Chinese and English.

Her first private message: HaJo????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????
Hello HaJo:Iam Jin Yong?I use my e—mail?write to you?today is May 6?is the first time I try to write in English to you?there may be many chinese name????I write in English again, please advice thank you!

I was very happy for it! Since then we wrote daily private messages and EMF’s beside it. For the translation we use Internet translators like www.MDBG.net. It works most of the times. Hehe. The same as I received the first private message, I received Jin Yong’s QQ ID. We have spent many hours on QQ since. Two days later I had gotten Jin Yong’s cell phone number.

On May 19th I received an EMF telling me to hurry home after work. Jin Yong was waiting for my first phone call at home. Damned, I was pretty nervous. But from the forums I knew, a little laughter would help. We had a lot of fun about two hours. Mostly we wrote on QQ and tried to say a few words. I will never forget that day.

A few weeks later we agreed to get married. Before that we agreed on that I would visit Urumqi in the beginning of August. I did some research on how I could get Jin Yong to Denmark. With a little bit of luck, Jin Yong will leave China together with me on when my vacation is over. We have planned to get registered on the 2nd of August in Urumqi. Later the same day we take the airplane to Beijing. Monday morning we want to visit the Danish Embassy and apply for a tourist visa to Denmark. But read my blog or the forum from end of July and find out what is going to happen!

I forgot, when I arrive at Urumqi Airport, only Jin Yong will pick me up, no people from the agency. It was her wish. And then we go directly to Jin Yong's home. No hotel needed, hehe.

But for now, I just hope that there will not be more riots in Urumqi. I have booked my flight. I am waiting for the translation of the single certificate. When I have that, I will apply for the visa. And soon I will be in Urumqi! Hehe

Deadly riots rocked Xinjiang

China has been the scene this weekend of ethnic riots the most violent she had known for decades. Sunday, clashes have, according to regional police authorities, at least 156 dead and 828 wounded in Urumqi, the regional capital of Xinjiang, an autonomous region of north-west. The clashes took place between the Uighurs, Turkic-speaking people and Muslim majority in the region, and Hans, the dominant ethnic group in China. The circumstances of the violence are still unclear. The government has accused the Uighurs of attacking the Han and pointed the finger at exiled Uighur dissent. Chinese television showed injured covered in blood, burned vehicles and the crowd throwing stones at police. Hundreds of people were arrested, according to authorities.

According to residents, Urumqi was dead yesterday. Shops remained closed and a curfew was declared. Internet and mobile communications have been interrupted, and the police criss-crossing the city. The province, populated by 8.3 million Uighurs, is regularly troubled separatists. It is a part, with Tibet (see below). The outbreak of violence in Urumqi also mentions the riots in Lhasa, the Tibetan capital on 14 March 2008 - China was accused of Tibetans attacking Han dix-and killed eight civilians and a policeman. "The Hans stifle the Uighurs," says Jean-Vincent Brisset, of the Institute of International and Strategic Relations.

I hope it will not affect your journey there :-/

Yeah, it'll be touch and go.  Unfortunately, in this kind of a situation,
the politics of the Chinese will dictate your travel conditions.  Slightly
similar is what occurred in Lhasa - to minimize outside influences
and rabble rousing, they simply cut off tourists and visitors. But the
current Uighar v Han situation wouldn't seem to be a reason to exclude
foreigners.  The Chinese have, in the past, curtailed visitors for safety
reasons and to avoid intergovernmental headaches.

Hope the unrest abates and allows you to complete your visit with
your young lady.

Why not make alternate arrangements?  If possible, have her meet you in a different City. Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing or some other where it is easy for her to get there.  At least until you know what is happening there.

I think it would be prudent to at least get some flight numbers set aside so if need be you could do it at the last minute and not have to go shopping around or pay full price because you dont have time to check.  Just my .02c

To meet is a minor problem! We could meet in Beijing. That would be no problem. But we have to get married in Urumqi. That is where we have the problem. We will go to Beijing anyway after the registration.

We hope the government will get the situation under control.

I understand that. I will be in Beijing from August 11th to October 11th. If you have time maybe dinner or lunch.  I guess i missed the marrying part. Congrats.

Thanks for the invite, but we will leave Beijing on the 7th again. Jin Yong's son has birthday on the 12th and if everything goes as I hope, we will have a lot of packaging to do. We will try to get a tourist visa for Jin Yong. That's our main reason the trip to Beijing :icon_biggrin:

Hajo, do you have to get married in Urumqi because her family is there or is because she needs to get married where she lives because of the local law?

Hey Jim, I'll be in Tianjin (half hour train ride to Beijing) then, I'd love to meet up and swap stories and share a couple of beers over lunch with you if you are interested?
My Ling will be in work during the daytime that week so I'll be exploring Tianjin and Beijing (mostly) and would appreciate the chance to speak to another westerner and of course to meet up with another brother would be cool.

Absolutely.  That is the law. Must get married in your home of record.  That is why Angel  and I have to get married in Wuhan.  Would like to get together.  I will be in Wuhan from August 19th to the 26th other than that I will be in Beijing.

Ronan, it's like Jim says. It's the law that says you have to get married where the lady has been born. At the moment there is a curfew on Urumqi and all the Internet connection are shut down. Mobile net is crippled too. Once in a while short messages go through. But it is not easy to communicate with the ladies in Urumqi. But it seems that government has the sitiuation under control.

Well, today came my ticket and tomorrow I will send my visa application to the Chinese Embassy in Copenhagen. In the end of next week I will know if they will let me go to Urumqi or not.

And no messages from Urumqi since monday. Internet and mobile phones are blocked. There is a curfew on Urumqi during the night. For the time being, there is nothing else then waiting and hope it will be over soon!

I cross my fingers for you ;)

It's Ginger Ale ... not Beer . Right? I do like Molson and La Batt's , but it's only good when watching Hockey not Soccer . For Soccer you need a real Beer . :P

Hehe Darius, I hope I will be able the European way, haha! Veni, vidi, victi like good old Cesar said. Now I will apply for the visa and then we will see. Concerning my blog, well I had a little accident in my living room (see the attached picture) :icon_cheesygrin:. That keeps me busy at the moment.

Of course, I am still concerned about Vicky. I have not heard from her since tuesday morning. Communication blackout in Urumqi. But I believe she is alright!

(hem.. sorry)
it seems anyway that it becomes slowly secured over there, and that's a good news for you ;)

About Canada Dry, it's a fresh drink, too, like some "lemonade" :)

Hajo, I still cross my fingers for you ;)

Sylvain, don't say it too loud! Otherwise the Danish authorities will find out that I want to get Vicky this way, hehe.

Yes, you are right the having the situation under control. I saw tourists arriving at Urumqi Airport. The Chinese authorities would not let them go there if it wasn't save. So it looks good! I hope for some contact in the weekend!

Do they have a fiancee visa that you can apply for for Denmark, that might be easier and then you could get married at home if things happen to flair up again, once they think they have everything quieted down and the army and such depart the area, Its just a thought if you havent thought about it
but you better get the floor fixed first dont want you stumbling over the threshold as you carry your bride into the house.........lol........:fi_lone_ranger:
Title: RE: Urumqi
Post by: Hajo on July 09, 2009, 11:13:36 pm
Norb, I had the same thoughts about the fiancee visa. I have read a lot of regulations and rules about visa and taking the lady home. It could be done on a fiancee visa, but it would probably take more time as the Embassy. There is a bigger risk that they would send the application to Denmark. That would take more time then the 2 weeks I have. I could read the visa for spouses of Danes and Europeans living in Denmark that are returning from foreign countries have priority in the visa process. It does not state if one has to return from a longer stay in a foreign or from vacation. I hope that will make it a little easier for me.

Well for the whole, thats the one of the reasons why I am not so active in the forum at moment. There is a maintanance basement underneath the floor that makes the house pretty cold in winter. Though, I fill the basement with sand and insulation.

As I said all communication into Urumqi and Xinjiang province is off from the outer world. But late yesterday I saw two mails in my inbox! I thought I was dreaming! Vicky has been sent to Beijing for some learning courses. Yahoooo!

Now we will be able to talk over the weekend and it is just 15 more days before I will arrive in Urumqi! Oh boy, I think we both will cry like teenagers when we finally meet! Vicky was afraid that I had finished the relationship because of that I haven't heard from her since the 7th of July. I didn't see her messages because I was working on the hole :icon_cheesygrin:

Wow, my feelings are completely stirred up know! I could hug the whole world because of happyness! And with a little bit of luck my visa will arrive today or tomorrow! Tonight, Vicky and I will have a very long talk!

Post by: Hajo on July 19, 2009, 01:27:40 am
Finally I could pick up my visa at the post office yesterday! As Vicky is staying in Beijing for the weekend we are able to chat. While chatting with Vicky she told me that they do not expect the Internet blocking to be removed before November this! Well, I cannot imagine how it would be to be without contact for several months!

Now it seems to me that everything has been planed by higher powers! If Vicky did not have had trust in me and we had not moved away from the agency so early, who knows how it would look like now! When we would still talk through the agency, we might not be able to communicate! What a horror scenario! Luckily Vicky told me several weeks ago that she wanted to go to Denmark with me right after my vacation. Therefore we have prepared a lot of things. Which shows now, to have been a good thing to do!

I will arrive in Urumqi on 1st of August. On the 2nd we will get the last papers translated and I will meet the family. On the 3rd of August we will get married and then we go to Beijing for the honeymoon! When arrived in Beijing we will apply for a tourist visa for Vicky! Hopefully she will get it. If she does, she will go to Denmark with me around the 15th of August. Then we will apply for resident permit in Denmark.

Another positive decision has been taken! We have decided to have one more child! For several years, I thought I would not, but there is something special that makes me feel very good about it, so I agreed! But it will not happen before her son has come to Denmark. I hope he will be able to come to Denmark in November or December. So if everything goes right, I will be father again next year! How does this woman do that? I am like butter in her hands!

Well, when it comes to my trip, I will not have the possibility to update my blog or the forum while in Urumqi! Only when I am in Beijing I should be able to make some updates. I expect to put the updates on the trip in both the forum and the blog. Well, 12 more days before take off!

Wow, your calendar has many crosses on it, don't you think so, Hajo? ^^
Reading your news lets me feel very happy for both of you, such many good news you are telling us :)

So, honeymoon in Beijing? Do you have any idea for good places and so on, to move there, with your future wife? :)
Hearing that you wish/want to be father again is also a very good thing, too, and I have to admit that your lovestory is really a beautiful one, thanks for sharing it with us :)

All I can do is waiting for your next update and readin' how all is evolving.
Actually, I'm sure you are counting the days before landing off to move there ^^'

Thanks guys!

Yes, it will be a very special vacation! Just 12 days left!

Peter, it will be a very big pleasure to welcome you and Tina here. It is only 1½ hour driveng from the ferry! We might come over to Sweden one day! We will see who visits first!

Arnold, that sounds like a good idea too! Vicky and I have been talking about visiting the Netherlands. Vicky loves the tulips!

I just stopped chatting with Vicky! She is in Beijing at the moment and has to return to Urumqi tomorrow. We will not be in contact until the 1st of August. It was not easy to stop the conversation. She told me that there is trouble in Urumqi again. That makes it not easier! I guess I will just be busy working until I leave Denmark! Then I think less of her, maybe! (I know, I fool myself).

I will keep you orientated whenever possible!

Thank you very much Jim!

I think it works out for us without problem. But it is always good to know that is somebody ready to help! We will return to Urumqi on August 10th because on the 11th it has been 3 years since Vicky's father died. That is a special traditional day where the family visits the grave. The day after Vicky's boy turns 12. So, there is no chance to stay in Beijing longer than the 10th. But maybe another time.

Arnold, I thought of writing a book too. But dropped the idea again. It not become more then booklet because everything happened so fast :icon_cheesygrin:
