Language translator recommendations
« on: November 10, 2017, 07:15:16 am »
Hi all,

Well, Li Hong and I are married, STILL waiting on US entry paperwork for Li Hong, so in the mean time, I am heading back to China in 2 weeks to be with her for awhile. I am looking for recommendations on a handheld translator (I have iphone translator apps but my internet connection in China is horrible for some reason and the apps never seem to work well, get connected, or have any speed) so I want to take a handheld battery/electric translator with me.... Any thoughts, recommendations, suggestions.

We use Wechat everyday for chat and video calls, but again when I was in China my connectivity was very poor, and it did not function too well.

Thanks.

google translate will let you download the languages for use off line.

Translate between 103 languages by typing
• Tap to Translate: Copy text in any app and your translation pops up
• Offline: Translate 52 languages when you have no Internet

You gotta try this one. Hostelworld.  It is a hotel booking software but a a bonus feature is a voice recognition translation. it is awesome.
Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Just an update... I met with Lihong in Beijing, and the Google Translate worked very well on my phone. My Chinese continues to grow, and Lihong's is progressing very quickly in her English. Now we are just waiting on the I-130 form process to SLOWLY move forward. Typical military fashion, hurry up and wait. Any recommendations on an older American speeding up his learning of Chinese? I don't have a good ear for language, but I do know how to work hard. I have been using Google Translate, and can recognize some Chinese characters from weChat, but I would like to be able to accelerate my learning.

Happy New Year!

This is what I use when I have time. I really need to get into this course now that I changed jobs and got normal human hours! This is a free trial but the course cost is minimal compared to many others.
