Problem with these Journos/Economists is that they always got to beat their own drum and mostly let their own skewed views get in the way of reality.
Remember the beat up over the "2000 bug"...economists and Journos predicted Global catastrophe and got gullible Governments to spend squillons of research dollars to "study the phenomena"...what phenomena...nothing happened.
Remember these same folks were merrily predicting endless boom times ahead...but they never saw the economic crash coming.
Remember these same folks were actually recommending that us mere mortals jump on board the "sub-prime" showboat...how many Americans (and some others) lost everything due to this piece of treasured wisdom from the "gurus"
These same folks are now back on the bandwagon and off again with another round of wise predictions..and us idiots read them and believe them...again. We are gluttons for punishment aren't we !!!
Thereis a fundamental flaw in the economic aruement put forwrd by Gizell, and that centres around 1.3 Billion Chinese !!! To keep this many people in a basic life, with no frills, requires the economy of China to grow at 6 % per annum. Population growth..even at their reduced level, will add 4% to the population eqch year...never mind the growth in demand for some of the "luxuries" we in the West take for granted.
There is no way that Chinas growth can ever get below 6 %...unless there is such a disater, it would not matter anyway.
As for energy and resources, yes China is a huge consumer of energy...why do you think they spend such vast amounts of money on stuff like the 3 gorges project. China is also the country that is replacing fossil fuel power generation the fastest in the world.
As for resources and raw materials, they will never be a problem, Australia for instance has the reserves and capacity to support an expansion of demand for coal, gas, iron ore, nikel, and alumina for as much as they want for the next 500 years.
The real problem, in the psyche of these doomsayers is that they are completely incapable of facing the reality that the USA may not be the most important and dominant force on the planet for ever. and that gives them pain !! So they are desperate to rationalise why China must falter in its charge to be the economic (and thus the power base) superpower over the next 10 years or so.
Just ask the Romans, The Goths, The Brits and all the other global superpowers of their day....nothing lasts forever.

ok i was just posting articles i read here for all to see as i read the news extensively each day. i did not say i was one of the IDIOTS that believes what they say just thought i would post it.

on the endless boom in the USA it was actually a very good time for us who had the insight to dump everything at the time were a fortune
could be made so their talk of the endless boom helped many of us to evaluate everything and make money  the ones who let greed set in
and wanted to wait are now the ones suffering and i do know my share of those people

Gwynee Dyer is a Canadian, not an American.

As to the article.... I can not see where his intent is to doomsay the Chinese Economy because of his wish to keep America as number one.

David, you stated "Remember these same folks were merrily predicting endless boom times ahead...but they never saw the economic crash coming."

I see Gwynne Dyer's article as a cautionary warning that elaborates your own logic "Just ask the Romans, The Goths, The Brits and all the other global superpowers of their day....nothing lasts forever"

Is this not just what Gwynee also concurs?

I am supposing that you are referring to the Article posted by Ted called "China's cautionary tale
"?

And Ted.... for my vote..... I do not consider this years Miss China Universe girl as that very pretty. But then that is just one man's opinion as I have already found my Mrs Universe  8)

Neil I think the response got side tracked off of Ted's posting thread "In the News"

We have had Hi-jacked threads so I guess this is the first Side-tracked thread.

But then come to think of it... I have heard put forward the theory that fashion trends predict economic directions. Eghad maybe there will be a skimpy future growth for China's near future ala Skinny Chinese Universe contestant.

Ted
Only a tiny few people made money out of the sub-prime/investment bubble...a lot of ordinary folk lost everything. I dont think that greed was the total issue, but usually these folk were acting on advice given by "greedy" experts. If you were among the fortunate/clever few who did OK out of the disaster, good for you. But I also know many ordinary people who lost the lot...and they were not greedy...just hoping to make a better life, based on bad advice.

Rhon

Gizell postulates that despite the trending and projections visible based on the past 20 years, China must falter in its march towards the Global economic dominance that is apparent. His logic to make this prediction is flawed. Yet he continues to believe that NOBODY can overtake USA as the global economic superpower. My point is, that eventually World orders change, sometimes for the better...sometimes not. Most of us here wont be around to witness the World in 50 years time...but I bet it wont look the same as now in Geopolitical or Economic terms. I personally (and my Research Team) cannot see the status quo being maintained, with USA at the top of the heap, and everybody else somewhere below this...in whatever way you wish to define "below"

David,

i was fortunate to get out when the getting out was good. so i made money on it but my freinds were always thinking
that the mountain was going to keep growing and they lost everything. my only regret was i didnt sell the last house i lived in
as i didnt do well with that one but i did manage to get out of it when i came to china. and yes your right they were listening
to the experts and thats what cost them dearly which is why you have to take all these expert advises with a grain of salt
and dont speculate what they are saying is gospel as it usually doesnt work out that well in the long run

David.... I think you are in an interesting field of research. Is this Gizell articule something Ted posted? Because I only found the Gwynee posting, unless you are refering that Gwynee was drawing his premise from a Gizell articule. Of course, now this thread has been derailed from the picture posting and probably needs to be moved under its own topic.

I am a big fan of reading about Social Economics "Freakenomics" so if you are engaged in this kinda of research David, then lets Date  ;)

And David what about this articule I just came across?

I agree, too thin, and pale looking ....
 :-\

Lots of young Chinese ladies are skinny ... doesn't mean she's unhealthy. You'll find the rest of the Asian country representatives the same. This young woman is representing all of China, they wouldn't have selected her if she was unhealthy.

I have to agree withe overwhelming majority here.... I too do not think she is as attractive as many Chinese ladies I have seen. Also while the Chinese may place a desire for what I call the "dead anorexic" look...overly thin, and pale....I really do not care for it. She may be "beautiful" by Chinese standards, but by "Western" standards she is simply average....at least to me.

Now here is what I call a REAL Chinese beauty. Chinese actress Angel Xu

Neil like you I thought i missed something?

I need to answer these in my own way, if I may?

The "2000 bug"...but they never saw the economic crash coming.
I knew nothing was going to happen, I said it then esp. when I heard that elevators would drop down shafts? At the time I was installing and troubleshooting the electronics of elevators throughout the state. So I knew this wasn't going to happen.

Remember these same folks were actually recommending the "sub-prime" how many Americans lost everything due to this piece of treasured wisdom.
Another thing I told people I knew to stay away from but did they listen? It was to easy to get but in the long run? turned to crap.

She is a little skinny.
