Earthquakes

Since Japan's earthquake there has been large coverage of it in the media. In a letter I just received I was told of another earthquake in the yunnan province? Has anyone heard anything about it? 26 dead.

Yeah there's been several here in China the last couple of weeks. Fortunately with a rather low death toll if you compare to the historic ones or the one(s) that hit japan now. I heard from a Swedish girl who is in Tokyo all stores are empty, theres no food to get in any 7-elevens etc ... most people have bought all they can and stay inside right now. We can only hope this is not just the beginning of something far worse to come.

Yes the media here showed the empty shelves in the stores. People ran right to the stores and bought out everything. But the China quakes? Not a word of it here.

Yeah Vince I heard about the quake in Yingjiang the other day. I cant remember if I seen it on the tv or internet but Linda called her father about it. We watched world news that night to find out more but they didnt even mention it.

yes its been very quiet in media re the chinese quakes. I read the reports on Echina i think. Theres been nothing in local news.. abit weird

I was chatting to a couple of ladies last night,  :D and I happened to mention the earthquake and tsunami in japan, and how bad I thought it was to happen :(.  They both said the same thing to me, that "it was good", and they were 'happy' it happened to the Japanese.

One went on to tell me about the atrocities that happened to their countrymen and women and children.  God they really hate them... :o  :o  :o

I guess it depends on the person. The lady that told me of the China quake felt bad for Japan. She wrote "I do feel so sorry for those people who lost their life". So Rob, I would say we are not talking to the same women?  ;D   ;)

My wife told me that she saw the latest China quake on CCTV1 and that 26 people lost there lives and 200 were in hospital. By all accounts it was quite small but still bad news for all those involved. During the Japanese invasion Baoding was their head quarters so as you may imagine there is no love lost for them here. Things are changing with the younger generation though.

The quake in Yunnan happened the day before the one in Japan. I read Xinhua sometimes. The reported a little about the quake in Yunnan. http://english.news.cn/

My wife asked me why the media does not report about the quakes in China. But I have no clue. Maybe because of few dead.

Peggy is glued to the TV about this.  Things like this worry her a lot.  She told me she also feels sorry for the people in Japan.  Rob I don't think the things you heard are all that widespread.

I remember seeing news about the China quake on my internet page, being that Yahoo.ca is my default home page. Also on our Canoe.ca I saw a brief mention about it. The Japan quake was more intense with immediate live video recording so the news will always show the more dramatic events. An earth quake followed by a Tsunami means dramatic pictures, means full news coverage.

In the last two weeks I think Japan has suffered from three large earthquakes (they were at least notable).  It's just that this last one had the biggest effect.  China I think has been hit by two earthquakes and New Zealand one...

As for why the one in China didn't make the news, I think it did, but with all the stuff going on in the world right now (the middle east blowing up, Japan's ongoing disaster, etc.), a "minor" earthquake in China is probably not newsworthy, especially if there weren't many deaths.
