How about replacing the word " Reputation " with the word " Thanks "  , then set it to allow only positive  feedback. If the post is helpful to a particular member then they can add a +1 or " Thanks" to the person that helped/assisted them. This method will allow only positive feedback if you wish to remain hidden and will require you to post openly if you have any negative feedback you wish to express. As far as ranking goes, I think that should involve a specific time period and number of posts before graduating from newbie to full member. After they reach full member status they can be allowed to have a signature then, that would cut down on a lot of the spammers that join, complete a signature line with a hyperlink and we never see them again.  Robert

SMF (Simple Machines Forum) can, if you make a request and they like that request, change the way the reputation is done and I am not to sure but I think you can find out who made the comments.  I'll try to look on SMF later.

Second we can do ranking but lose the military terms.  Newbie  Jr Member Member Sr Member.  We could also put in our status Single, Engaged, or Married.  Also Immigration completed.

Martin check out Visa Journey and see how they do their membership levels.  Also a timeline scale would let one know where they are in the process.  The example I will give below will be crude but you will get the idea.

                      X                                                                                    X
Single-----Engaged----Married                    K1/K3-----Inverview-----Failed-----Immigrated

By the way if I remember correctly my reputation was a +4000.  Oh wait...  that was another site.  :P

I go along with Roberts suggestion.

Guests will not be able to anything other than look and read.  Maybe the guest privilege could be limited to one day and after that they have to join as I know a few translators come on here as guests regularly.

I think that a person just joining openly should be able to post as they may need our help or advice urgently.

If for example a new members comes on and needs some urgent advice, another new member is first to see it, then they could mischeviously, provide an answer that could cause problems for the first.

In which case the new person needs some indication that the reply he has received is based on fact or knowledge so I think that a  'thanks' or a plain "like reply" button would help show the status of the person replying.

To prevent a 'i've got more points than you' situation arising then maybe we sould do as Maxx suggest then have a system of levels. We have super mod and mods, we could have a two more one for newbies and one for the knowledgeable and old timers with the mods in own their conference section of the forum deciding on who gets which and when.

Willy

PS. To prevent a new member seeking out an 'old timer' then there should be a restiction on them sending PM's until they have made at least ten posts.  That way the forum will stay as useful for all as it is.

Like you mentioned earlier tonight, you could reinstate members rep points with Thanks so nobody loses anything! That will also give the new members an idea of the responder's experience and advice level.   Robert

Good Idea .... We could call them "Thank you points" .... and only allow for them to go up in value, and never down!

 :)

This is not a bad idea.

Post count and joined date. You could add extra space there for members to write a number for number of visits to China. And a checkbox if dating or if married, also a checkbox if the person is currently living at China. These would of course have to be member self controllable. Or else the mods/admins workload would be too much I think. And we would have to trust the combination of all of these options. To know if the info is good or not?

Willy,
I agree with the 10 post minimum before pm's. I have had several people send me 1 or 2 pms and then they disappear from the forums. Restricting pm's will also work in the favor of the newbie to an extent by making them take time to actually read some topics where the question may have been addressed previously! Robert

The reason I don't favor the married /engaged, etc thing is 3 letters MLM. We don't know for sure who is really married and who just say they are. Get my drift.

I can only reinforce my own view on the reputation issue....

I see Rep points (I have no problem with calling them that) as Peer Group endorsement (or censure) of anything that gets posted. Tht is healthy and constructive if done with responsibility and care. To leave any sort of judgement solely to the Mods is unfair (IMHO) because they should have confidence that we (the Bros) can Manage it ourselves and let them get on with more important stuff.

I would like to see somehow that a negative entry gets some sort of explanation, in case it is a genuine slip up. I dont know if this is possible or not.

What we had before was simple, easy and quick. if we now get over- complex with Military rankings, restrictions on posting numbers or some such arbitrary reputation statistic we will get into endless arguements.

I dont think I ever saw any comments in the line of "he has got more points than me, or less points and so on." its only an interest thing, not Earth shattering !!!

It sems that this whole current saga came about because Robert was concerned enough about a negative point to try to find out who and why. We know Robert is meticulous, timely and accurate with his info...ALWAYS and he seems to be the sort of person who always tries to help to the best of his ability. Anybody on this Forum for more than 10 minutes must surely know this. Likely the negative rep came from a guest or a complete newbie ???

So I think that the only change I would introduce is to prohibit Guests from posting until they had completed the membership registration and thus became "accountable" for what they say or do.  The we can go back to the old format...which worked  ;D ;D ;D

Well I for one never new that Guests could post. This is about the only forum I know of that does if this is the case.

Many forums do have restrictions on contacting other members direct until they have posted a number of threads themself.  As Roberts said he has experienced this with newbies that have circumvented the forum by going to him direct with questions.

But to clean up our act along with the points issue surely when registering one should have to fill out the whole form not just name and leave the rest blank then one can easily check that they are at least from the country they say they are from and not an earwig , regards Robert .

Please get rid of this Reputation Points. Already, there are too much arguing and disagreements going on here on this site  to agitate each other. Enough already.
Thanks.

I as a Mod or NO Mod (doesn't change my Mind on this) have to agree with Wilfred. What is better anyway? Someone thanking you through the PM system or on the Open Forum for your good Info or a +point you have NO idea who send it?  Minus point are not needed either, for infractions we PM with warning's to each and everyone.
