PHOTO SOFTWARE
« on: May 01, 2012, 08:11:11 am »
Fiona and I decided rather than lug 25 pounds of photos across the pacific we would scan them into the computer.

Thats when I discovered her "fashion" photos. I like to call them husband bait. She has some professionally done photos that just blows me away.

But there is a serious problem. When I scanned them into the computer I noticed a lot of white specs in her hair sort of like dandruff.   when the photos are enlarged and on the computer screen they look really terrible. I cleaned the scanner glass and wiped down the photos but nothing changed. They still looked terrible when enlarged.  So I scanned them again at 1200 bpi resolution and blew them up again and discovered that the specs are not just in the hair. They are everywhere but just harder to see on a light background. Enlarged further I can see that the specs are little bumps when the paint, silver salt or ink has been lifted from the surface.

Here is my theory. The air in southern China is so humid that the photos are actually wet and growing bacteria in the paper stock used to print them. When the bacteria grows it swells and lifts the paint from the paper.  Nothing can be done with teh photos at this point other than to disinfect them to keep them from getting worse. However I have some very high resolution copies in the computer and if there were some software  that can find and remove the specs I could salvage them. Any ideas?

Never mind. I found a photoshop filter that removes dust and scratches. It is AMAZING.

I wish I could. They are great... but this forum will not allow images larger than a peanut.  If I put them here it would not do them justice.  Maybe I can find a home for them on flicker or my other server.

Ok I am copying them to my server on go-daddy. If not for the Photoshop filter I would have spent a week on each photo. They were that bad.  It is really humid here. There were some negatives in the box of photos and they were actually wet.  The Photoshop filter made things a little soft but the still look great in my opinion.

Scan264.jpg is my favorite.
Scan253.jpg was left unmodified (without the filter) to demonstrate how bad the originals were and how well the filter works.

here is the link.    http://niwot.net/httpdocs/fionaphotos/
please don't share this link with others. the last time I shared some files on my server (Chinese music) i exceeded the bandwidth allocation several times and the provider shut me off until I upgraded.
