The Eagle Has Landed

RIP Neil Armstrong.
Like most of my generation, I was woken up in the middle of the night, me as an excited 6 year-old, to watch the moon landing.
As an example of how to conduct yourself, it would be hard to beat Armstrong's humility and dignity. How easy would it have been for him to exploit the commercial possibilities his fame brought him. Kudos to him for not cheapening his legacy by succumbing. A modest man. A hero.

That day was one of those 'I remember' moments.

For me it stretches back to I remember where I was not only when I heard about 9/11, when I saw Neil Armstrong's epic walk, but also when Kennedy was shot, the Queen was crowned and even to the great flypast over London when so many planes flew over celebrating the end of WW2 I was a  young one standing next to a WW1 ex serviceman who lost both legs in that previous war.

I was 14 or 15 when Neil walked on the moon.  I remember it well.  My family spent many hours riveted to the television watching.  Dad went out and bought our first color television just for this purpose only to find out that everything was in Black and White.

Also have a series of DVD's called From the Earth to the Moon.  Great documentary of the Apollo space program.  I think it is time to watch again.

Neil will be missed but remember as a great American Hero.

Enjoy walking in the heavenly realm Neil!

I still have the original tape recording I made at the actual time of the Moon landing, as we watched it all on TV. We had no such thing as VCR or such.

The absolute cool and guts of the Man when he was talking down the last few moments of the flight, saw that the computer was taking them into a boulder field, took over manual control and landed safely with 32 seconds of fuel left....was one of the bravest and uplifting moments in history.

Vale Neil Armstrong...you always have your special place in World History for ever.........and what a great man also.

I was 16 at the time ( just two weeks before I came to America ) , I stay'd up all night that day to see it all go down. This was for me sooo exciting, as I was just getting into Astronomy and followed everything about space going on at the time. As I got to America, I purchased the "First Day Issue" (envelope w/Stamp ) from the Post Office. Still have it in a safe place. Must be worth something by now?
I was always wondering what he was doing all those years, as he was pretty much out of the News most of the time. As he would have said, I'm no Hero.. I just did my Job as I was told to do. Question.. did he ever write a Book about it?
