What are you American going to be doing for the bicentenary events there in 2014.

Whatever you decide - and yes I will be celebrating it in my own way.

I am glad someone asked.  I believe that it is 200 years since the existing White House was built in 1814.

That is after the British sacked Washington and burned the first one down ::)

They were going to remodel it anyway. Needed to be bigger and white.

Oh and this was the before the British went on looting Alexandria but then got their lunch handed to them in Baltimore. Then in New Orleans Andrew Jackson decimated the British forces which
ultimately led to the end.

Second time a we kicked you out and you have never returned and tried to rule here once again.
We became your protector in years when world wars broke out. Not bad for a country of immigrants
who embraced their new land and who were just merchants, tradesmen, farmers  when this all started.

Thank you China Bound. At least one person who lives in America agrees that Briton DID rule that colonial minor outpost of the British Empire.  Along with a good part of the rest of the World.

The British are coming...  The British are coming...

Oh NOOOOO!!!!!!!! :o :o  We didn't invite them to the tea party. ::) ::)

I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends,
A chance to share old memories and play our songs again.
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name,
No one recognized me, I didn't look the same.

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself!!!!!!

When you say Tea Partay....   You've said it all.  ;D

Ah 2 in 1, Willy & Shaun an answer for both. The first thing that came to mind on Willy's post was the first line on Shaun's but it is not correct.

Yes the British Empire ruled for a short time. Until there came a day the people said "Hey! What the Hell?" They first overtook the Dutch that were settled here. Then fighting it out with the french over territory and the rest is history. FYI New York History, A wall was put up to defend Manhattan, then New Amsterdam (Dutch settlers) against invaders like the Britts. When the wall came down a road was put in and named "Wall Street" yeah, that Wall Street.

As for the line "The British are coming" This was not the warning said. They were British. The Red Coats are coming is what was said. Meaning the British Army.

Correction Vince.

It was not the people who said this. It was the few very, very rich people who thought this was a good way to take control and get even richer. As in all wars it is very few of them who end up getting killed. Nothing has changed today. The poor pay the price for the rich.
