I have never see a suit worn on China other than on the TV.  In fact I have never seen a man wearing a proper jacket.   I have six suits here in London that are less than a year old and this is where they will stay.

Yeah, I know a suit is overkill. But it's a confidence thing. I feel confident in a suit and I have sceptical parents to woo.

Not having been to China I don't know how people dress. But in Tokyo it was exceedingly rare to see a man without a suit on during the week.

Brett,

I don't know how to tell you this!! .........But your not going to Japan mate, your going to CHINA!!

Your not going there to work in an office, your not going there to get married, and wearing a suit to meet prospective parents is not required, or expected!! In other words, leave the suit at home where it belongs.

I thought you said that you blend into the background and become inconspicuous wherever you go, well you'll definitely stick out like a sore thumb in a suit, .... especially during the evenings!!!
China is has a completly different culture and mind frame to Japan, you'll be making a very big mistake if you try to associate one with the other.....

Depending what time of year you go to China, you would be far better off taking warm clothing or more lightweight clothes than packing a suite, that's going to get creased to buggery on the trip. In fact i'd suggest you leave extra space in your case and buy your clothes in China, there much, much cheaper than anywhere in Europe.... I always go with an empty case, and come back with a case bursting at the seams!! ...hahaha!! Most of the stuff I've bought there has been pretty good quality too, but you do have to be a little discerning in choosing what you buy....

All Joking apart, forget the suit Brett....Really!!

David....

Brett,

I brought over my suit as well. I haven't worn it once and I have been here for over 6 months in total so far. I agree with David ... a nice pant and shirt is more than sufficient. When I met Sunny's parents and family, I only wore a short and t-shirt. Her father wore the same type of clothing to the restaurant. Here in Kaiping, businessmen or male wedding guests don't wear suits as well. If you're coming in the Fall when it's cooler, a blazer would be nice where you can mix and match with different slacks. David is also right about buying clothes here ... VERY AFFORDABLE FOR YOUR MONEY. A decent pair of shoes only cost $ 10 Cdn. I brought 3 sport socks for $ 1.35 Cdn.

Yeah, I'm still not decided about the suit. I think my lady wants me to bring it. But I am really struggling with the language :s. I typed "I bring my suit to china?" into google and it say "I will sue china". I think this would be a disasterous thing to suggest to my lady.

I am getting a lot of ":icon_biggrin:" to the suit idea though. Women do like men in suits, that much is certain.

I'd only wear it to the initial meet + greet things anyway.

When I mentioned to Ke Ren about what I am taking to China clothes wise, which also included a suit BTW (lol). :icon_biggrin:   The reason I mention the suit now is my own preference especially if going for interviews or being nicely dress in School.   She responded not to bring a lot because we can get it there.  I will take one with me out of the selection I have, But I will 'hid' it somewhere lol.:icon_cheesygrin::icon_cheesygrin:

Brett, one thing I can say : Liyan liked my shirts and my tie, so... no need (I really think and agree with Chong & David) to have a suit over there.
Maybe when time will come to marry... ?

Yes Rob will try and hide it under his kilt. :icon_cheesygrin:

I can see it now Ke Ren says, "Rob? what is that large lump under your kilt?"  Rob, "Sweetie, I am just happy to see you."  :icon_cheesygrin::icon_cheesygrin:

Lol. Yes, don't bring your LAW suit to China! You'll never win. Classic translation confusion.

When my lady laughs, it translates as 'Haw Haw', but if I try and Haw Haw back, she thinks I've got a strange obsession with hawthorn fruit.
Also, sometimes when she asks a question, there is a little word that makes it into a question and doesn't mean anything by itself, which gets translated as 'woollen cloth'. Took me ages to figure that one out.

My lady likes tartan skirts and I might get her one as a birthday present. But I am not even going to try to attempt to explain kilts to her .

I didn't get a good answer to the suit question, but I think she was :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin: to the idea. I'll see how much room I have available for it.

Brett,

Since everyone who has been say the clothing there is much cheaper I think it would be a good idea to leave the suit home.  If you find that you need one then purchase it there. Then when you get back home you will have two fine suits.

Shaun

P.S. Forget the kilt, just would look good on white and red porcelain skin.
